What was Corporate America like before e-mail?

Asked by wgallios (1768points) August 13th, 2010

It seems like now days most peoples job is pretty much checking their e-mail. It’s like the main line of communication; I think sometimes the phone would even come second.

I guess my question is, what was it like back in the day before everyone had an e-mail account to send and receive information? Were corporate jobs less hectic due to not as many e-mails come through with menial tasks that need to get done from the boss? Or rather than getting a less intrusive e-mail, you would get calls all day long?

Productive.

People used typewriters and actually wrote stuff with pens and pencils, and they mailed or hand-delivered their epistles. I know, I was there. Less hectic? No. But it did allow more time for the sender to ponder what he was saying and the receiver to do the same about what he or she was reading.

I would get a lot of phone calls and they weren’t as easy to ignore.
