Researching a company , what are the best source(s)?

How do I find out the amount of debt a company has?

And how do I found out about insider stock ownership and history of company buybacks?

I use Yahoo finance and the research center at the brokerage firm Etrade.
Here is a link to study Google http://finance.yahoo.com/q?s=GOOG
You can start there and put in the symbol for the company you want to study. On the left side you will see many tabs with the info you want. Note “Insider transactions”

Private companies are not required to be listed. Also be aware that the numbers you see are reported by (supposedly) unbiased accounting firms that make a lot of money working for the company. It is in their interest to make the company look good.

Annual Reports Online can also provide you with a lot of information. I agree with @worriedguy about Yahoo finance.

The company’s corporate/investor focused website is often a good place to start. Most have links out to their more recent annual reports and any SEC filings (8k’s, etc.) that, if it’s public, would be required. If the company is private, information may be more limited/difficult to find (of course, you probably won’t be worrying to much about stock ownership as any private company issuing stock wouldn’t be issuing it to the public). EDGAR is the tool the SEC uses for it’s information searches…you can find it here:
