How do I fix this problem while installing Windows service pack3?

Asked by antimatter (4424points) August 28th, 2010

When I tried to install service pack 3 I got the message Access denied. I closed all programs, disabled my firewall and stopped my external hard drive.

Are you using an administrator (superuser) account?

Yes, I logged in as an administrator.

You may have to boot into safe mode. Tap F8 during boot until “Windows Advanced Options Menu” menu appears. This guarantees that no external programs are opening your system files.

Thanks I will try that.

Where is the Service Pack (package) located? You might be trying to access it from a netwrok computer that does not allow access. Please elaborate for more helpful hints

OOPS! So it’s being accessed from your external drive? hmmm it shouldn’t be a problem. Perhaps you should copy it to your main drive then try set up.

@actuallery No, I believe it is on his local drive. He said he turned off his external during the install.

@Vortico – He doesn’t really say where the service pack is located, maybe it’s a “download” and “Run” setup?

Vortico's avatar

@actuallery A “download and run” setup would download the installer to a temporary location on the system drive and execute it.

@Vortico – Yes.. but… it may be blocked by an option in his settings about running downloads on the fly.
