What do you do when it's time for a meal but you're not hungry?

Asked by SamIAm (8703points) September 28th, 2010

I’m never really hungry in the morning but sometimes I force myself to eat something small (a piece of fruit for example) because I know it’s important to start my day off right. But what do you do when it’s time for dinner and you’re not hungry yet? Waiting until 10pm isn’t a good thing, but forcing yourself to eat doesn’t seem right either.

I don’t eat. I’ve skipped dinner when I haven’t felt like it. Hasn’t caused any harm so far lol.

I’m never hungry in the morning, but I eat something small anyway, because it does kick-start your digestive system, plus, I always end up feeling hungry in class if I don’t. As for lunch or dinner, if I’m not hungry, then I don’t eat.

I drink a can of pop… or two glasses of milk or water

I usually don’t eat unless I feel a bit hungry at least. If you don’t feel hungry, and you eat a meal, then you’ll just store extra calories that can add pounds. My advice is to wait until you do feel a bit hungry, maybe a few hours later, then eat a little. But don’t eat a full meal at that later hour, or else you will gain unnecessary weight.

When you wake up in the morning, it’s better to eat something with carbs, like cereal, noodles, bread, etc. I know you don’t feel hungry, but your body needs the energy carbs give for the day. I find that fruit doesn’t give me the necessary energy in the mornings.

I eat. I am borderline diabetic, so I have to eat when I am supposed to eat and not eat when I am not supposed to.

I rarely eat breakfast. i know its the most important meal of the day, but if you are not hungry, you are not hungry. if i eat just one bite, i then require a full course meal. i generally eat a really good dinner and a snack at bedtime. i understand your situation. i, like you, have suffered no serious consequences for my strange eating habits. all of us are different, so that makes this okay for both you and i.

if you’re hungry it’s too late to eat.

I make sure to eat anyway, something small – to keep my metabolism going.

My diabetes is controlled by my diet, so I eat as I am supposed to, five small meals a day. My choice would be some fruit, or salad.

I don’t eat, but, usually have a tall glass of milk (of chocolate milk). Don’t ask me why.

I find if you eat at a set time everyday, you will be hungry at that exact time. I’m the same way at night but that will usually happen from eating a very late lunch and then making it heavier than usual because I waited too long to eat. Have some fruit between your meals so your not famished or too full and you should be fine to eat a normal to small size meal by dinner.
I still will eat something like @YARNLADY suggested if I’m not hungry at night so I’m not eating a late dinner.

Ever since I was a kid, eating in the morning has made me feel nauseous but I eat anyway and get it over with. I always feel glad I did and the other meals are always tastier and more enjoyable.

I do simple for breakfasts:
Banana
Yogurt

or
Egg
Cheese

Get some Ensures, or go the cheaper route and get some Slim Fast. And just chug one of those, there somewhat nutritious and easy to drink. There also portable so you can just grab one and go.

I eat, because I have a tendency towards hypoglycemia (I’m not diabetic – more kind of the opposite, but I’ve been warned that I’m at risk of it). So I will at least have something otherwise two hours later I’ll more than likely have a proper crash and keel over.

Depends on the situation. If I was not going to have another chance to eat for several hours, I would go ahead and eat something. If I can eat at any time, I would just wait until I was hungry.

I eat when I am hungry. If I’m not hungry I don’t eat regardless of the time.

When you walk up the Grand Canyon it’s time for a salty meal almost every hour and it doesn’t matter whether you’re hungry or not. You have to eat to avoid a dangerous condition.

Not as extreme, but somewhat similar is the time before an important exam.

small package of crackers and cheese, babybel, anything small like that prepackaged that I can eat fast and not think about but yet satisfies the 5 smalls meals recommendation!

It’s rare but there are men who suffer from anorexia, I’m one of them. My problems with food started at an early age, possibly from trauma. I just don’t eat that much. I’m tall, and skinny, and don’t have a lot of energy. Something I’m working on.

Don’t force yourself..in my opinion. A reason that you don’t feel hungry in the morning could be because you eat dinner too late at night. (a guess since I’m not hungry in the morning either when I eat late at night) if so, what I do is drink liquids such as coffee, almond milk, juice or all three. :)

If I am not hungry, I don’t eat, unless there is a reason I should, such as I am going to be away from home and I won’t have the chance to eat, or I am traveling and have to stay on more of a schedule. Otherwise, not eating isn’t going to harm me.

Don’t eat until you are truly hungry. It’s not good to force yourself if you really are going to be sick.

Also what works for mein the morning is apiece of whole wheat toast with some peanut butter or you can have yogurt and granola.

AshlynM's avatar

Granola bar, juice or salad. Maybe an orange or yogurt. Something light. No point in forcing yourself to eat if you’re not hungry.

What is the time span between your meals. Eatin breakfast is the most important meal of the day and evn if you aren’t hungry when you gt up, eating a yogurt or piece of fruit is better than nothing. Lunch sould be your biggest ad heavist meal as it will help you get through the rest of the day. Dinner should be something lighter and definetly not close to bed time. Your body need a certain amount of calories to function properly and yor metabolism will thank you.

Being type 1 diabetic really helps with this. You better eat on time or it’s hello ER.
