If god apologized would you forgive him?

Asked by ninjacolin (14246points) December 21st, 2010

Let’s say he actually made himself known to mankind in a meaningful and convincing way for everyone. (Which hasn’t ever happened, btw) If he apologized for hiding from everyone and for making it impossible for so many of us to believe in him… and if he promised to make it up to everyone.. would you forgive him?

Why or why not?

Yes. Well, if he appeared, it would demonstrate that there was a God, and I would want to be on his good side in those circumstances.

Jeruba's avatar

Let’s hear the apology first.

Better yet, let’s see it in writing, signed and notarized.

Blueroses's avatar

I suspect there would be dire punishment for not accepting the apology.

tinyfaery's avatar

Apologies mean nothing. It’s a change in behavior that warrants forgiveness. Plus, a God would have to prove existence first.

Jeruba's avatar

Reason for the notarizing, @psychocandy: you have to prove that you are who you say you are.

ninjacolin's avatar

I agree, @marinelife. lol @Blueroses.
@Jeruba and @psychocandy, the question assumes that he did make himself known in a meaningful way. :)

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

@Jeruba What does God produce for ID for the notary?

Winters's avatar

Nope, cuz if he does exist, I would still have a massive list of things that I would be somewhat ticked at the guy for.

BoBo1946's avatar

God apologized when He send Jesus to die for our sins! The ultimate apology.

Pandora's avatar

I see no real reason for him to appologize. We screwed up our own world. All mans/women (but mostly men) doing.
Any reason he has to guarantee us a smooth life? My parents made and their only obligation was to feed and cloth me and guide me. The rest was my responsibilites. I no more blame them for my illnesses or troubles than I blame God.
Ditto @BoBo1946

ucme's avatar

Nah, he’s got nowt to apologise for. He’s not been hiding anyway, just playing hard to get.

Pandora's avatar

@Adirondackwannabe Guess if he strikes the notary dead and then brings him back, then the notary will sign anything. LOL

ninjacolin's avatar

God created your illnesses, @Pandora. That’s a bit different than your human parents.
And the jesus thing doesn’t mean anything to the “so many of us” mentioned above.. you know, since none of that is convincing.

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

There you go Pandora!

BoBo1946's avatar

The Jesus thing depends on perspective. My perspective is that He is real. Everyone has to “float their own boat!” I’m riding with Him.

tinyfaery's avatar

Poor non-Christians. God has never apologized.

Pandora's avatar

Whats to say the illnesses wheren’t created to control population. We had to die from something. If we all lived long and healthy lives, we would be either over populated and probably have turned to eating each other to control the population and because we would’ve long eaten all the animals.
We already kill with no regard for life. Eating each other would’ve not been an improvement over illness.

ANef_is_Enuf's avatar

If Jesus dying on the cross was the apology, where was the change in behavior that followed and really showed remorse?

ninjacolin's avatar

Well, you’re very lucky, @BoBo1946 to have that belief then. If I could believe it I would. It’s not exactly something I have a choice in.

BoBo1946's avatar

The change in behavior is within us. We are free moral agents to make our own choice about Him.

BoBo1946's avatar

@ninjacolin it’s a lifetime thing with me (well, since I was 12 years old). It’s a part of me that walks with me everyday and all day.

ANef_is_Enuf's avatar

Agh, @BoBo1946 I like you too much to continue this conversation. I don’t want to go there.

I would require the proof that God is who they say they are, and it greatly depends on the apology. Also, I’d like to see a change in behavior to follow. Otherwise, no, I can’t see myself accepting.

ninjacolin's avatar

Well, I just had strep throat, @Pandora. It didn’t kill me. It just really really made my life unpleasant for too long of a time. Suffering isn’t fun, God. :P

BoBo1946's avatar

@TheOnlyNeffie got’cha my friend. I understand. I changed after I accepted Him. Not before. Enough said.

This lifes journey is as much a learning and finding answers for ourselves with all the means available for us all to find those answers but if that were to happen of course I would forgive him. He doesn’t need forgiveness but yes I would.

LuckyGuy's avatar

My life’s been pretty good so his apology would be totally misplaced.
Better he should talk to the folks in Haiti, or the women raped in Africa, or the Tsunami victims, or the endless list of families who lost loved ones in religious wars.

TexasDude's avatar

He’s a bad god and he should feel bad

But seriously, in my mind, part of the whole “God” thing is being completely beyond all human comprehension and thus unable to “reveal” itself/Himself/Herself to us in any tangible way. Kindof how Demea in Hume’s Dialogues Concerning Natural Religion portrays God.

iamthemob's avatar

Yes, but like this:

“Accepted…but unnecessary. I’m pretty sure we did all of the really bad shit ourselves.”

classykeyser's avatar

Nothing happens when you die. Except maybe decomposition.

Blueroses's avatar

“maybe” decomposition? I thought that was one thing that could be counted upon. Depends on the added preservatives, I suppose.

ANef_is_Enuf's avatar

@Blueroses do they make preservatives like that? Ha, a little creepy.

incendiary_dan's avatar

Abusers always apologize and say they’ll change. Most don’t change their behavior, though.

GladysMensch's avatar

No, because that which apologizes is fallible, and that which is fallible is not “God”.

Crossroadsgrl's avatar

I got stuck on what He’d apologize for

lillycoyote's avatar

I don’t see what god would have to apologize for. It seems to me that a good 85% percent of the pain, misery and suffering in the world is, and always has been, that which human beings cause and bring upon each other and the other 15% is caused by some combination of disease, natural disaster or just plain dumb bad luck. How is that god’s fault?

Rarebear's avatar

Without question, absolutely not. I’d tell him to his face what a piece of shit I really think he is.

jazmina88's avatar

When we apologize, I’m sure God will forgive Us

ninjacolin's avatar

^ prove it.

@Crossroadsgrl if you leave a baby helpless, it’s bound to get itself in a lot of trouble.

coffeenut's avatar

Which GOD would be Apologizing? there has been soooo many

What would It be apologizing for?....

1-for hiding it’s existence?
2-for past atrocities?
3-For pitting Religion against Religion?
4-For pitting Humans against Humans
5-For demanding worship?
...a list too long to list….

lol….would GOD destroy me if I told it to #%!&# %@!&^*#!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Deja_vu's avatar

I want God to apologize for bad-carbs and trans-fat and saturated fat. Other than that we all have free will. That’s why lot’s of things in the world is shitty… because of mankind… Mankind owes the world an apology.

classykeyser's avatar

All things good and bad are caused by mankind, because mankind is all there is.

iamthemob's avatar

^ prove it.

Very good question and one that helps me understand why many do not believe in a God (higher being). Many blame God for everything that takes place on the planet. God has NO (I will repeat NO) control over the Universal Laws of the Planet and cannot control them. Do you think God can step in and save everyone from cancer? Do you think if you were to shot yourself in the brain he could just step in and rescue you? Though from his knowledge he can do things that we think are miracles. It is his knowledge of the principles and of him being a Higher Being that allows him at times to alter what we may view as normal but when we gain that knowledge then we shall be capable of the same actions.

I have children that passed because our technology was not capable of saving them at the time. If they had been born in today’s technology they would still be with me in the flesh.

ragingloli's avatar

I would strip him of all his powers and then put him on trial for genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity at the international war crimes tribunal.

Summum's avatar

One could never strip anyone of their powers which come from knowledge of the principles of Universal law which all are subject to. Our place in this existance is to learn, understand and progress in our evolution to become a Higher Being. There isn’t anything that Elohim has to appologize for. We just need to take the great and wonderful opportunity to advance ourselves and use it to the best of our ability. I wish everyone well on our journey in life and may you all progress with the knowledge of our existance. Blessings
