NSFW- Do you worry about the finances of the adult entertainment industry now that you can get anything free on the internet?

Asked by Imadethisupwithnoforethought (14682points) November 11th, 2011

How are they making money?

As a follow up, does anyone actually pay for pornographic material in the Fluther community?

Worry, about the finances of the porn industry? Surely you jest.
No. I don’t support pain and shame based industry.

Yes, sometimes my concern occupies me all night.

I take medication specifically to get my anxiety over the porn industry under control.
Pay for their products? Of course, otherwise I would be guilty of copyright infringement!

I worry about it so much, I can’t stop masturbating.

They will adapt and survive.. Shit happens. My mother’s great-grandparents and grandparents made a pretty good living for a couple of generations owning a saddle and harness shop. Then the Industrial Revolution came along and brought with it the “horseless carriage,” and that was kind of the end of things for the family harness shop. The family survived the Industrial Revolution, as will the pornographers and their families, survive the Internet Porn Revolution. They will just have to adapt. I am not all that concerned. They will be o.k., I’m certain of it.

@lillycoyote OMG see I am not the only one worried for these poor people!

Not any more than I worry about the finances of the music industry or Hollywood. They seem to be doing ok.

Yes, people actually pay. It seems to be the same people who pay for movies and music via Netflix and iTunes and Amazon and Hulu.

I actually pay more for porn than I do for movies and music. Movies and music, I usually torrent, though I also have a subscription to Amazon Prime and Hulu Plus. But porn, most of what I’m interested in is stuff that you can’t torrent. A lot of it is smaller, newer, indie porn that no one’s actually gone through the process of putting out there for free. And there often is a mindset that you don’t put this stuff out there for people to download for free (or you do, but only a small amount, so that people can get an idea of if they want to pay for it or not – but not the whole collection). And this is a mindset within people who are all about creating torrents, and uploading things for others to download for free. It’s seen as kneecapping smaller-time people who are trying to make a substantial difference within the porn industry, people who are basically doing “God’s work”. It’s sort of like how many have no problem downloading big pictures from big studios (like Transformers, or Twilight, or Pirates of the Caribbean), but if it was made by a couple of struggling grad students and shown at the local film festival, you’d better pay for it or contribute financially in some other way.

And, just because you can get lots of things for free doesn’t mean you can get that specific video for free, and a lot of people are pretty big on getting that specific film.

It’s funny you asked this, I was just trying to figure out which site(s) I wanted to get a subscription to this month.

@Aethelflaed these indie porn outfits- are you actually allowed to make requests? Do you get to communicate with the auteur or is it anonymous?

Aethelflaed's avatar

@Imadethisupwithnoforethought Um… it depends. I know that there are sites where you can make requests, though I think those are usually more amateur webcam type of stuff. The ones I’ve paid for, not to my knowledge (though, there’s always the chance that there’s some tab I didn’t click on), because it’s more pre-recorded than live. But then I think there’s a little bit of give and take – for example, if tons and tons of fans on the site where like “omg, would totally love to see a Victorian themed video” or “would love to see more anal fisting”, then they might say “you know, I could do a Victorian themed video, that seems like a cool idea” or “you know, we haven’t done anal fisting in the past because none of the current performers are into that act, but let me see if there’s anyone both looking to join us and into anal fisting”.

@Imadethisupwithnoforethought As the article I linked to mentions, it’s all about horizontal integration, if the pornographers want survive and stay on top.

XOIIO's avatar

If it does, we’ll see more amateur stuff.

There’s pornographic material in the Fluther community? ( Those nasty misplaced modifiers…)

You mean they do it for the money? Those greedy bastards!

Pas de tout!

Oh yes, sometimes I do wonder about their money making these days. Years ago I paid monthly fees for BangBros since they seem to have all the hot chicks in the US on camera. I eventually lost interest and went for the free ones.

Thing is, I have a feeling most of the porn sites, free or not, are owned by the same few guys anyway. And they make money with ads too not just membership fees I guess. It would be interesting to have a Fluther porn site. But we have to wait till sea creatures like squid and octopuses evolve to having credit cards to pay and watch jellies doing slimy squirty embraces. Lol.

People still pay for porn, because:
• The free stuff is not of high quality, or as sharp as the stuff that cost.
• You can get content for pay, you have a hard time finding free, or in full length.
• You can’t get some girl to do for free what you ask them to. You have to feed her meter and she will respond to what you ask.
• You don’t get to see the true porn stars in the free stuff.
• The free stuff do not show you all of it, you get only bits.
• You cannot interact with free porn as you can a cam girl, or phone sex.

Those who most likely would never buy it, won’t, and will choose a free option. Those who don’t mind spending, will still spend if they see something they like.

People still go back to the casino even though they lost a bundle the last three times they were there.

No more so than I “worry” about the finances of the music or Hollywood film industry. Besides, the porn industry is an exception to the music or Hollywood industries in that the free amateur stuff is way better quality than the professional stuff anyway. To me anyway, most the pro stuff just screams fake.

For example, the guy is fucking a girl then pulls out and cums all over her stomach; I know why they do it that way, because they have to show the guy cumming on video because the pros think the viewer is too “stupid” to realize that he’s cumming inside the girl; but that’s such a let down, IMO.

But the amateur stuff, the people aren’t acting or faking it, they’re really getting their rocks off on video, and you can just tell that it’s real.

The music and film industries might be in trouble, but there’s plenty of amateur porn producers and writers to keep people “entertained.”

And sometimes I think we’d be better off if all art (music, literature, video, etc.) was created by amateurs rather than professionals.

XOIIO's avatar

@HungryGuy Exactly. If I was paying I would want soemthing for my money, good quality, some directing, not all the fake cheesey bullshit.

blueiiznh's avatar

Seriously?
First, I don’t worry about things.
It would be on the bottom of any of my concerns.

XOIIO's avatar

Well someone must like it on top.

Ahh, I couldn’t resist XD

rebbel's avatar

Yes.
In fact, I started a fund raiser recently to financially help the poor bastards.
Send your gifts to 528761 and receive a DVD with outtakes from The Babysitters Part 1 to 12….
