What is the best deodorant out there?

Asked by Equestrian18 (144points) June 4th, 2013

I am a young woman, and have trouble finding a good deodorant for myself. What deodorant do you guys use and why do you like it ? I sweat a lot and sometimes my armpits smell after a long day, even with deodorant on. What would you guys recommend that works really well? Is there any stronger ones than clinical? What about making my own deodorant with baking soda and coconut oil? Any of them you guys “swear by” ? Thanks

I like Mitchum gel. They make several for women.

I use mineral saltsProduct+Listing+Ads40–60_-FT-1004&gclid=CP3R863ey7cCFU6i4Aod42MALQ#.Ua6QntiYGCQ because I do not like the ingredients in anti-perspirants.

Honestly, the only thing that ever worked for me was the cheap $1 Arm & Hammer deodorant. I’ve tried a bunch of different kinds because I sweat a bit and despite wearing deodorant my pits still smelled but this seems to do a very good job at keepin it all fresh and such.

Sure, unscented. And trust me, pachyderms need a lot.

I use mineral salts as well. I’ve been using it for about 5–6 years now. It seems to work well.

I use Old Spice antiperspirant deodorant. It works well enough for me.

Axe, I know it’s for men but the pink one (exciter i think is the name) just smells really girly.

I’m with @Adirondackwannabe: Mitchum. It works better on me than any of the other clinical strength deodorants out there. Suave clinical is my second choice.

Nothing worked for me until I started buying “clinical” versions of Secret and Dove. Some companies do sell prescription antiperspirants/deodorants, too.

I think it’s hard for one person to say what’s the best, as what’s best for one might not be the best for you. Try different things and see what works for you. I get whatever’s on sale, but I’m not particularly sweaty.

I make my own. Here’s the recipe. It is not an anti perspirant it’s just a deodorant.
2 tbs coconut oil
1 tbs baking soda
3 tbs arrow root powder
5 drops of your favorite essential oil. I like lavender and lime, but you can choose.
Mix all ingredients until completely blended.
I have small jars I keep it it. I apply it like a cream.

@Judi Does it work well?

I personally like secret clinical when I’m really sweating because of the humidity and when I’m exercising, dancing, doing hard work, or outside in it.

And secret spray for when it’s cold out since I don’t work up a sweat when it’s cold no matter what I do.

It works great for odors. I don’t sweat a lot but it does everything I need it to do. I don’t like the chemicals associated with anti-perspirants. I’ve heard they’ve been possibly linked to Alzheimer’s and lord knows the chemicals of the ‘70’s already did a number on my memory.

nofurbelowsbatgirl's avatar

I am going try it :) even if I have to wear it just on the cold days. I agree I do not like the chemicals associated with anti-perspirant either.

I use Sure. Others are better smelling, but when I sweat I smell. With Sure, I don’t.

I use the Dove Cucumber Melon deoderant.

Try the Mitchum or Clinical products from Sure or Dove, and if it doesn’t work, go to your doctor and get a prescription. Yes, it’s a more drastic remedy but your self-esteem and social confidence are important and you will feel awkward with this problem. I know – I’ve been there. It did decrease as I got older. But right now, you’ve got living to do.

Good luck!

@Judi: The thought of an oily, powdery cream being applied by hand to my underarms seems gross to me. Just IMHO.

All garnier products make me breakout with acne, I avoid them at all costs.

nofurbelowsbatgirl's avatar

@jca I don’t think it would be oily at all. Misconception, coconut oil is not oily it has more of a lard like consistency. The only “oily” part is the scent and even then you are just putting a few drops we aren’t making salad dressing are we? I think the consistency will be more like petroleum jelly <lol @ jelly. Am I close @Judi?

Judi's avatar

Yes. I was thinking about trying to make it by heating it and putting some beeswax in it. I make my own chap stick and have those tubes. I wonder if it would work if I put it in the Chapstick tube?

Right now you do have to dip your fing in and rub it on kind of like lotion but as soon as it hits your body heat it sort of blends into your skin.
The beeswax would make it harder.

nofurbelowsbatgirl's avatar

@Judi You could almost sell that on Etsy if it worked! Lol. I think it’s worth a try! I will be doing this as my winter less sweating time deodorant, I’m looking forward to it @Judi thanx! :)

I think I’ll see if I can find out if I can find the deodorant tubes.

I absolutely love Right Guard Total Defense 5 Cooling. It’s like armpit A/C.

Judi's avatar

@spykenij, we can get that in the home made deodorant by putting peppermint in it.

spykenij's avatar

I know it’s just menthol, but it amazing. Never saw anything like it until Right Guard made it.

Arid XX in any scent, Ive used it all my life, had plenty of women comment on how good i smelled. Often don’t even wear cologne.

Works great and last for 3 or 4 days, apply generously before going camping.

EDIT: NOT THE SPRAY OR GEL, REGULAR STUFF

Zinc pills.

Surprisingly, yogurt. But it depends a little on what brand, since some so called yogurt does not actually contain yogurt bacteria. Yogurt is also known to be a healer of cold sores. It works whether you smear it on the sores or eat it.
