What would you recommend as THE drama series to learn English?

Asked by dumitus (657points) October 7th, 2013

The assumption is that one will, after having mastered these drama series, move abroad and start living in a foreign country in which English is the primary language.. Of course this one has basic knowledge of English and can thus study English on his own in his home country.

If you had to recommend one drama(or sitcom, whatever) series,
what would you pick as the ultimate study tool?
something you have to master at least to get by in that tough foreign country?

Actually the question is for myself, I think I will go to Canada
about an year later and I can understand pretty much….
especially what people say on
The sitcom Friends, or the Office the drama,
is easily understandable to me.

What else?
IF you are living in United Kingdom,
please recommend one of your own country for I might go there too some day…
Thanks!

Watch Community, the television sit-com. It is a sit-com that strives to be both a funny character study, and to subvert all other TV sit-coms and every popular movie trend.

When you finish, you will be streets-ahead.

It might be worth considering watching a show other than a sitcom or drama. In preparation of moving from the US to the UK, while both English-speaking countries, it has been helpful to watch news reports and talk shows.

One reason is that words aren’t spoken as quickly. Another reason is that they will expose you to the culture of the country. This includes the country’s lingo, politics, geography, pop culture, etc.

The Sopranos. A variety of plain English speaking people, just enough slang to get you familiar with idiom.

Or, an old series like “L.A. Law.” More conversational English with idiom but not a lot of temporal slang.

Grey’s Anatomy. “Seriously”.

Bad Girls Club.

Perhaps Dexter. The main charterer speaks very slowly and clearly when he isn’t killing people.

I’d say, anything you enjoy watching. Put it on with closed-captioning on, so you can read it whilst you’re watching.

The Wire…...Lol.

I like @johnpowell‘s suggestions: Dexter. I didn’t realize that until he said it. Try Six Feet Under as well.

The West Wing.

If you can understand “The Wire” or “West Wing” you should be able to come here and rock the country. I could understand “The West Wing” but totally gave up on “The Wire.”
