Why would a guy stop talking to a girl who had plastic surgery?

Asked by illusionslies (586points) October 24th, 2013

Let’s count down the reasons!

I have a friend, Rick, who cut contact with this girl Allie who had her nose done last February. She looks prettier to me now actually. I don’t know what Rick thinks but before asking I wanted to ask ya’ll and enjoy the situation!

Not everyone agrees with cosmetic surgery. I don’t, unless you have a very defective issue that is effecting your self esteem or health. Who knows what the guy is thinking. Somebody needs to ask him directly. No one is a mind reader.

Rick sounds shallow. lol
I’m not a guy, but I would think that there would have to be a reason other than plastic surgery to make a guy stop talking to a girl.

Maybe he finds her hard to look at now. You might like the nose job, but he might not. If they don’t have a relationship already he is going more on how she looks than how he feels about her.

Maybe Rick thinks the girl is too shallow and high-maintenance if she’s so concerned about her appearance.

Maybe it was a coincidence and there was another reason he stopped talking to her around the same time she had her nose fixed.

Were you about 15 years old at the time? I lived in a predominantly Jewish neighborhood. Girls who had kind of beakish noses often got plastic surgery and ended up with buttonish noses. They had to wait until their nasal bones had stopped growing to get the surgery done. It was very common around that age.

Perhaps he liked her nose the way it was.

Maybe he doesn’t like the results. Maybe he thinks she’s shallow and vain for undergoing plastic surgery.

Maybe the brush off was unrelated to the nose job. She got the surgery over a year and a half ago and he just cut her off recently? Why would you even think it was because of the nose job?

Even if a guy does not approve of cosmetic surgery, he should realize that each person has the right to make decisions for themselves. Rick may not be mature enough to have learned that.

Did he try to dissuade Allie from having a nose job in the first place? If so, he may feel that they don’t have much in common if she went ahead with it anyway.

Maybe she ended up looking awful to him, and it put him off her (that’s a very shallow reason, but it happens every day).

Maybe he had a crush on her and now she looks totally different. It’s like the Jennifer Grey syndrome. She looked fantastic with her larger nose, she looks totally fine with her new nose, but she is completely un-recognizable as Jennifer Grey. As you can see Here

Or maybe he had no particular interest in her before, and simply stopped talking to her afterward (regardless of the surgery) because guys can and do, do stuff like that all the time, because they just “aren’t that into them.”

Or maybe he found someone else that he was more interested in and didn’t really care about Allie all that much to begin with, and couldn’t care less whether or not she had a nose job.

Rick needs to mind his own business and stop being judgmental about another person’s decision. Cosmetic surgery isn’t illegal or unethical, and it affects nobody but the patient.

I always laugh when someone under, say, age 25 speaks out against cosmetic procedures, ridicules those who have had them, and declares – with absolute wisdom and certainty – that he/she will never, ever do such things. I’d love to encounter that individual 30 years later and learn if the strident opinions have softened (along with the person’s face and body).

@Kardamom “It’s like the Jennifer Grey syndrome.”

So many websites run-down Jennifer Grey and show before-and-after photographs. But, the “before” pictures are from about 25 – 30 years ago. She was really cute in “Ferris Bueller,” a movie that was made during 1984. Jennifer Grey is now a 53-year-old woman. Those unfair before-and-after comparisons are exactly the sort of thing that drive celebrities to get cosmetic procedures; they’re not allowed to grow old gracefully and constantly need to compete with their youthful selves.

Jennifer Grey looked amazing after her nose job. It was great cosmetic work. She lost her “Jewish” or more ethnic look, but the new nose was perfect. It was not ski jumpy, nor could you see up her nostrils, nor was it too small, or too thin, it did not look like a nose job, but did make her look more waspy, which seemed to bother people. Being Jewish myself, and I am often compared to Jennifer, especially when Dirty Dancing is on the TV, if I had a nose job I would be thrilled if it came out like Jennifer Grey’s. I also would be ok if mine was less altered and just straighter, but hers was really good.

Kardamom's avatar

@SadieMartinPaul Yeah, Jennifer Grey was then, and is now, a beautiful woman, I liked her prominent nose. If I saw her on the street, I would not recognize her, because she looks so different.

It is horrible that somehow she probably felt shamed into getting it altered.

JLeslie's avatar

@Kardamom She didn’t get it very young. It’s very common for Jewish girls to get nose jobs, I think it is more of a cutural phenomenon, it doesn’t have to mean she was shamed into it.

Kardamom's avatar

@JLeslie I’m just guessing that because she was in the entertainment industry, she was probably shamed into it. Sad fact is, right after she had it done (and she looks beautiful with either the old or the new nose) she got a series on TV, but because she wasn’t recognizable as the pretty girl from Dirty Dancing and Ferris Bueller, it was cancelled. No one knew who she was. Up until that series, she hadn’t worked for quite a long time, I’m guessing some studio execs suggested that she get a little work done.

I dont get why people seem to be bothered by Jennifer’s nose job. she looks much better.

JLeslie's avatar

@Kardamom Are we even sure she wanted to work? It could all be rumors. She was perfect for Dirty Dancing because it was about a summer resort in the Borscht Belt. All us Jews used to go up there to places just like the one in the movie, and Jennifer looked so typical. We had dancing a couple times a week, swam all day, played tennis, watched a movie when they had them. We used to pick berries in the woods and give them to the kitchen to make pies. The teens who worked there all summer all screwed around with each other I am sure; I used to see them joking around at night, hanging out, smoking, having fun.

@illusionslies I don’t understand why people think she looked better with the old nose. She looked fine both ways, but I agree she looks prettier with the new nose.

Jennifer Grey’s nose was larger, she was “cute”. Her new nose makes her “hot”.
That being said, I prefer her larger nose because it made her unique.
Other than her voice, I don’t recognize her as Jennifer Grey.

Maybe he thinks she’s fake?

JLeslie's avatar

@Katniss Funny that you perceive Jennifer Grey’s nose as unique. I was going to say in NY that nose isn’t unique, I guess for the big screen it is? And, then I laughed a little to myself thnking about what I high percentage of actors and actresses are Jewish and probably had nose jobs.
