What new, or altered, holiday recipes would you like to try this year?

Asked by Kardamom (33302points) August 14th, 2014

I know it’s the middle of August, but I like to plan ahead.

Are there any new recipes that you would like to try for Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, Christmas or New Year’s eve?

Maybe you’ve spotted a new recipe for stuffing on Pinterest. Maybe you’re sick and tired of green bean casserole and are searching for something new.

Share your ideas for new recipes that you’ve already found, or ask some questions about ideas for subbing out a new dish for an old one, and then we can all share.

Make sure everything is delicious : )

Instead of the traditional green bean casserole, I would like to try this recipe for Cauliflower and Brussels Sprouts Gratin with Pine Nut Breadcrumb Topping

I would like to try making Jamaican Black Cake (NY Times recipe). Involves liquor and pureed dried fruits. I had it once, from Jamaica, and it was sooo good. It’s their version of fruit cake, except it’s not chunky, it’s smooth.

@jca Oh yes! I think you and I discussed this cake and it sounds marvelous!

I hate traditional xmas pudding, all that brandy, mixed fruit & flame…yukkypoo!
I may make a giant marshmallow & light my farts afterwards instead.

When I was a kid there was a German lady up the street who made the BEST bread in the world. They moved in 1974. In the early 80’s I tracked her down, somehow, to St. Louis to ask her how to make her bread. She just kept saying it was a regular bread recipe, nothing special. She never told me what she did.
I reconnected with her daughter on FB this year and asked her about that. She said her mom always puts extra eggs in anything that requires eggs, and that was probably what she did with her bread…like 4 eggs or something, or just the yolks or something. I’m looking forward to trying that

Brussels sprouts with Parmesan and pine nuts is a tasty way to dress up one of our staple vegetables.

I’d like to find an incredible oyster dressing recipe. I’ve only had it once and haven’t succeeded in getting a copy of it.

We are debating on two possibilities of change this year. A) Borrow my brothers deep fryer and fry the bird. or B) Try a Capon instead of a Turkey. Years ago I had a customer order a Capon every year and i have never tried one. It could be really interesting. Either way, an adventure.

If you want a method to insure that your house won’t get burned (or just want a good chuckle) head over to YouTube and search for “Alton Brown Turkey Derrick”.

Guaranteed to be interesting :)
