What subject you would never give quarter to for maybe being at least partially right, because it is a subject you are dead against, even to discuss?

Asked by Hypocrisy_Central (26879points) September 21st, 2014

There are subjects people just refuse to discuss or give any merit to as being right, even in the smallest bit. They do so because the comment, question, issue, subject, etc. fall in their ”adamantly oppose” range. What falls in that range for you, something you do not even want or care to explore to even provide a chance there might be some truth in?

The privatization of government services for profit. Such schemes as prisons for profit and converting public highways to toll roads are good examples of capitalism gone amuck. I am however not one bit averse to discussing the issue.

I have a few such things, including but not limited to:

- Pure Supply-side economics works!
– Apple products are superior and/or technologically innovative
– America is a Christian nation, and separation of Church and State is wrong! (And it’s close relative, “Christians are being persecuted!!!!1111”)
– Muscle cars beat sport compacts in all areas
– Republicans are too Liberal and need to go further to the Right

To me, not only do those arguments fly in the face of a mountain of evidence to the contrary, but it’s often the case that people who hold those opinions are oblivious to reality and immune to facts in other ways. The best you can hope for is that they will be civilized as they reaffirm their belief that the 6,000-year-old flat Earth sits still as the sun revolves around it, so it’s usually not worth wasting your breath on them.

That God doesn’t exist. I can’t prove He does, you can’t prove He doesn’t. So why argue about it? A complete waste of time.

The thing we should be trying to figure out together, as theists and atheists, is how to seperate faith from politics, which concerns me very much, ie the LGBT/ SSM issue.

I don’t listen to anything that tries to disprove or discredit the following:

God does not exist

Evolution is real

Global climate change exists

Cats are better than dogs

Gender is socially constructed and not just a result of your sex

I’m pretty open to everything else.

@tinyfaery I’m pretty open to everything else.
There are some things in that everything else, you have not thought of but would get your blood boiling should someone try to discuss it in any way other than your thoughts on it.

tinyfaery's avatar

That’s your opinion. You have no idea what gets my blood boiling.

I don’t have to know what it is, but everyone has a subject they go from 0-raging in 1.5 seconds.

If someone disputes the existence of God, I’m with @KNOWITALL. There’s no proof that He exists, but there’s also no proof that he doesn’t exist, so I am not really going to discuss it and I’m definitely not arguing about it.

If someone says that abortion should be illegal, I’m not arguing about it because I feel it’s one of those topics where people have their heels dug in, and there’s no use arguing. My opinion is mine, someone else’s is theirs.

When people say climate change is a myth, I won’t argue. They can spew all they want, my mind is not changing but nor am I arguing.

Basically, what I’m trying to say is that I’m not arguing about much. To me, life is too short to argue with people.

Giving no quarter to (showing no mercy towards) applies only to people and not to subjects, if you care.

Hypocrisy_Central's avatar

^ Thanks for pointing that out. Seeing grammar is not a subject you shy away from in the lease, what subject you avoid because you have your mind set even though the truth might be different than what you agree but you do care if t is or not?

gailcalled's avatar

It’s not grammar but idiom, which promotes clarity. We do like clarity, do we not?

Hypocrisy_Central's avatar

Is that a subject you avoid like the plague, or do you have another, since we seem to be discussing this one, so I am taking it this subject is not “avoid at all cost” :-}
