What’s in it for them?

I have no idea what’s in this particular bill, or why they didn’t vote on it. However, lots of times it isn’t the bill itself that’s the problem, it’s an extremely undesirable “extra” that was tacked on later.

Could you provide a link?

My guess is that they’d trot out the “hurts small businesses” line.

ETA: Yup, that’s the good old flogged horse. Here’s an article about it.

We all know why they did it. And we all know whose lap dogs these shameful toadies are. The truth is, that you have to grudgingly admire the Republicans in their ability to OPENLY defy any and all measures benefitting anyone who works for a living. The marvel is that so many of those working their asses off fail to notice. Perhaps they’re just too damned tired to pay attention.

I guess because Obama and party wanted it.

And what gets me is Republicans and their blind followers still believe they are there for the working man, BARF! ( but I guess if they say it enough some will believe it)

I don’t know why the Republicans voted against paid sick leave. I’m a Republican and I would have voted for it with a certain restriction to keep workers from taking unethical advantage.

We had paid sick leave where I use to work and some people were out sick very frequently. Then all employees voted on a new sick policy that required that an employee be absent from work (sick) for 3 days before the paid sick leave started. And it passed with a huge margin in favor of it. With the new sick leave policy in place there were a lot less people calling in sick. I wonder why? HA!

FYI: I only called in sick about 5 or 6 times in the last 20 years and each time I was either in the ED or admitted into a hospital.

Typically you get two weeks sick leave. After you use it up you don’t get paid if you call in sick again.

@gondwanalon That’s a reasonable policy. I’d vote for that too. I get so pissed when people call in when there is shit to get done and they are just getting themselves out of it. At the same time though I think there should be a small number of paid sick days that you can take when needed. I also hate it when people come in sick and spread crud around.

Well, there are vacation days and personal time off.

Don’t you get paid sick leave in the US? Nothing? We get 10 days a year and it accumulates. Some people do abuse it but I can only think of one person I’ve worked with who has done so on a regular basis. Most people I’ve worked with don’t take their sick leave. I’m going to see if I can find any research with stats.

^My husband receives no paid sick leave. He had to use up his two weeks paid vacation when he became very ill recently, then miss more days without pay once the vacation days were used up.

Earthbound_Misfit's avatar

^ that just seems crazy and wrong to me. A healthy workforce is an asset and if there is nothing in place to ensure people who are sick can take the time to get well, they’re likely to try to work when ill which creates a whole range of risks for the employer. I’m glad your husband is doing better @jonsblond. I imagine you both now have to manage the stress of trying to catch up financially because of lost pay. Not great for anyone’s health.

I don’t want to derail the thread but he’s not better. He’s able to work through the day but it’s difficult. Our system is flawed and needs to be changed.

janbb's avatar

@earthbound It varies from state to state and employer to employer. Most public workers get some sick leave.

ARE_you_kidding_me's avatar

It’s really all about the employer. Gov’t can impose some minimum regulation but generally the terms of employment are what determine sick time

I have only worked one job where I got sick days. And that is in about 15 jobs over multiple industries.

And I have been fired for not coming in on my day off too. Suck a dick NAPA Auto Parts.
