Is there any chance that the Fluther search will ever be fixed ?

Asked by Buttonstc (27605points) August 20th, 2015 from iPhone

Or will it just remain that way to vex us continually and hasten the exit of even more people?

I realize that there will be no new development but this isn’t really in the “new” category.

But the broken state of Fluther Search just gives the impression of a house falling into more and more disrepair (windows boarded up, etc) as if no one has the energy to care about it anymore.

I’m not trying to excessively negative here. Just some honest feedback.

I doubt it. Ben is the only person in a position to fix it. He keeps paying for hosting this site and does the occasional emergency fix, but at this point in his career he just keeps Fluther alive out of kindness. His plate is full of other stuff. I wouldn’t expect him to tackle anything beyond the absolute essentials.

I just tried search, and it worked for me.
Seems like sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn’t.

Here?

Here is the search method I use. site:www.fluther.com

site:www dot fluther dot com frizzer would find you frizzer comments. ( remove dot and insert ”.” make sure to leave a space between com and the item to be searched for. )

I just tested it as I do occasionally by writing in a term I know has been used. I just typed in “Aldi” because I know people have talked about Aldi on occasion recently. Users with the letters “Aldi” in their name come up but for the posts that have Aldi, nothing, just the 404 message.

ibstubro's avatar

Aldi.
19 results.

jca's avatar

@ibstubro: When I clicked on your link, I got your profile page. When I just typed in Aldi again, in search bar, I got the same thing – the error message.

jca's avatar

I just clicked on it again, @ibstubro and I got the 19 members with “Aldi” in their names, but not posts that say Aldi. I know it should pull up any posts that have Aldi in them and it’s not.

Mimishu1995's avatar

@jca I clicked on @ibstubro‘s link and saw the Aldi results too. I typed Aldi and saw all the result and no 404.

jca's avatar

@Mimishu1995: Did you see posts that have Aldi, or just users that have Aldi in their names?

Mimishu1995's avatar

@jca Everything. I even clicked on the posts and they appeared.

thorninmud's avatar

I get only usernames that contain “aldi” plus the 404 message. Tried it with a couple of different browsers and got the same result.

ibstubro's avatar

I got 18 users and 19 questions with Aldi, as I linked above.

Occasionally search works for me, occasionally not. I don’t try it often.

I think I’m Win7. Firefox, for sure.

I have no problem finding users, but I can’t find questions. I figured out that if there is a question I really want to find, I’ll ask a throw-away question that’s along the same lines as the one I want to fine. I did that once, and sure enough the question I wanted to find was listed under the “similar questions” list.

Dutchess_III's avatar

Who the hell is Aldi?!

jca's avatar

@Dutchess_III: Aldi is a store. I think (if I can remember correctly), it was maybe mentioned in the post from someone about the difference between “your and you’re.”

It’s also been mentioned when people talk about stores.

I’m with @thorninmud. Users but not posts.

Dutchess_III's avatar

Yes, I remember, @jca. It was just a joke. Aldi was mentioned in the “When to use the possessive apostrophe” question. We decided “Aldi” does not require the possessive because it is comprised of the first two letters of the owner’s name, and the first two letters of the word “discount.”

jca's avatar

@Dutchess_III: Right. So it should come up when it’s searched for.

I also have been finding that not everything that is “new” is posted under my “activity for you.” So I may see that I got a GA but see no change in my “activity for you.” I can click on the GA and then see that there have been new posts.

@ibstubro: That’s great. I wonder why some get the posts when they search and others don’t (me and @thorninmud to name at least two).

Mimishu1995's avatar

That makes me wonder too, if my phone is better than the computers ~

thorninmud's avatar

@ibstubro , are you using the mobile platform too?

jca's avatar

I’ll search later from my Samsung Galaxy 4.

ibstubro's avatar

I am searching from my desktop, @thorninmud. My only option.

If someone needs something searched, PM me, although I occasionally get the 404 message myself.

dxs's avatar

Not sure, but if you would like to search something, Google it and include the word “Fluther”.

Dutchess_III's avatar

How excellent, @dxs! I did that, using “Native American” and there they are!

jca's avatar

I just searched for “Aldi” from my Samsung Galaxy 4 and it comes up with the 404 error message.

Dutchess_III's avatar

I did it on my desk top and it came up with a whole list (the same list I got when I google “Aldi, fluther.”

jca's avatar

Maybe it’s broken for some users but not others? I don’t know. Weird that some say it does not work for them (from any device) and others it does work.

Dutchess_III's avatar

Well, there have been times when I did a search and nothing came up like it should. All I got were users. As far as Aldi, goes, that one word did work.

ibstubro's avatar

I just used it to find the alliteration game. Took a few different phrasings of the question, but it worked fine.
