Will Hillary and Bernie join forces?

Asked by SquirrelEStuff (10007points) May 3rd, 2016 from iPhone

Now that it appears that Trump is the Republican nominee, and also appears to be beating Clinton in early polling, what are the chances that Bernie runs as Hillary’s VP to help “unite the base” and team up against Trump.
While most Bernie supporters say they will ultimately back Hillary, there are many who do not like her.
What do you think?

Maybe Bernie will be Hillary’s vp pick.

Honestly, I think anything is possible this year. If she becomes the nominee, he could accept an offer to become VP.

Bernie’s supporters are quite a bit more extreme than he himself is. While some of them might refuse to vote for Hillary, I think Bernie is more likely to try to pull the left together to defeat the Republicans. Especially this year. Likewise, I imagine Elizabeth Warren might actually consider a VP invitation if Hillary becomes the candidate, even though they are opposed on many issues.

Either of these choices would have the effect of shutting up voters who stupidly say they refuse to vote Dem if they don’t get their perfect candidate. They will have no excuse, really.

It’s not likely. Bernie will almost certainly endorse Clinton and pitch in to elect her, but he’s just too far left of her to mesh with her agenda.

Bernie will be Hillary’s VP pick when Hell freezes over.

Waiting to see if Donald names Hillary to run as his VP.

I think Hillary is more likely to pick Bernie Madoff than Bernie Sanders. At least they’d be able to compare their Jailhouse Tats.

Hillary would fare better if she picked Sarah Palin than Bernie. Voters behind Bernie are there because they despise Hillary and would be the last ticket they would support and a large part of those Bern voters who are sick and tired of politics as usual would hold their nose and punch the Trump. Both parties right now are in panic mode and I cannot keep up count with all the heads that are exploding right now. Like a 4th of July grand finale.

Hillary & Bernie…Hernia

This election gets funnier as it draws to its inevitable conclusion, a cunt in the white house

The best case for the Democratic party is for Clinton to get indicted and she drops out. I think Bernie has a much better chance vs. Trump than Clinton does.

I think Trump as the candidate effectively destroys the Republican machine. All of those in place “wink and a handshake ” deals that would be honored by any machine candidate are now in question. The party is FORCED to back him just to maintain the hope that the grease will still be
spread around as usual. But the gloom is already thick over the all but certain disruption of the patronage escalator. Meanwhile the intellectual remnants of the party find themselves in the position formerly occupied by log cabin Republicans. George Will is all but shouting that the only hope for the future of the GOP lies with established Republicans voting overwhelmingly for Hillary. Now there’s a thought!

I think it likely that Hillary will look for a running mate that’s everything she isn’t.
Think a Democratic Paul Ryan. Hispanic a +, but minority preferred.
If she finds him, and they won, the security surrounding President Clinton would have to be greater than even Obama had, as the first Black President.

I believe you underestimate the efficiency of the Republican machine, @stanleybmanly.
If Trump wins, the leaders at the top still have to cut the best deal possible, then it’s all trickle down from there. Trump is still going to have to cut deals to get anything done. Trust Ryan to be farsighted enough to realize the future implications of any policy put in place – a foresight nearly completely lacking since Reagan.

Still, the troubles facing the party with Trump at its head are manifest and formidable. The man is the most unpopular individual to yet hijack a nomination. There isn’t a poll yet taken that doesn’t have the Democrats mopping the floor with him. Of course he will attempt to mitigate the characteristcs responsible for all the revulsion. But he is just plain too obviously the answer to “what could be worse than business as usual?”

Still, the troubles facing the party with Hillary at its head are manifest and formidable. The woman is the most unpopular individual to yet hijack a nomination.

As far as Trump, you’re simply echoing the dismissals of Trump that started on the day he announced his candidacy amid what was, arguably, the best Republican slate since Reagan. The chances of Trump steamrollering Hillary grow by the day, IMO.

Anyone seriously opposed to Trump has got to stop dismissing him. I’ve been saying that for months, now, and I say it again in regards to Hillary.

Someone needs to explain soundbite to the woman. She opens her mouth, and my eyes automatically start to glaze over.

I suppose we’re going to all find out together.

One reason Bernie has not capitulated is that it will give him and his supporters a strong input to the party platform.

stanleybmanly's avatar

Yes, exactly! Bernie will say things at the convention that the hooked in millionaires (party leadership) will gladly ignore if allowed. And here it is important to note that Bernie’s great following is precisely due to the failure of the Democratic party to address the issues of the left. Trump’s great wave is about a crowd of folks who don’t recognize that their issues are the SAME as Bernie’s following. The longer Sanders is there to scream at them, the better the chances that the less brain dead of the bunch come to see the point.

ibstubro's avatar

And once Bernie says all the right things and the Democrats put them in the party platform, Hillary is free to ignore them, as the platform is non-binding.

stanleybmanly's avatar

That’s true

This is the “anyone butt” election race so IMHO it won’t make a lick of difference who names who as their running mate. The nuclear option I would LOVE to see is Donald naming Bernie as his running mate….ka-BOOM!

stanleybmanly's avatar

Trump is not a conservative, but Bernie would choose a firing squad before Trump.

Cruiser's avatar

@stanleybmanly Clearly I was being facetious….and in your scenario Trump would be with a rifle front and center and Hillary would be next to him holding a fully auto AK.
