It's a good day here for ice cream. What do you plan to do about it?

Asked by stanleybmanly (24153points) May 26th, 2016 from iPhone

For you folks with actual winters are the Dairy Queen’s & Tasty Freeze’s open yet?

Mint chocolate chip in a waffle cone.

Or a peanut butter cup Blizzard.

We celebrated a birthday here in the office this morning, so I’ve had some excellent food. I would like to finish it off with some ice cream. It’s too early for peach. Perhaps I’ll look for something else.

Everyday should be icecream day!

I’m way ahead of you. We had a Dairy Queen ice cream cake at lunch today.

Just bought two “half gallons” for the holiday weekend: Chocolate truffle and Butter Pecan.

Our DQ never closes. I just returned with a chocolate cone dipped in chocolate.

I’m having trouble understanding the concept of a day that may NOT be good for ice cream.

Jeruba's avatar

Any day is an ice cream day, just as any weather is napping weather.

Funny you asked this just after my family bought a big ice-cream box for my birthday. We haven’t tried it yet but it was almond chocolate flavoured. I really wanted to buy some cones but the box was the only way we could share. I wish I had more flavour though.

Coloma's avatar

Oh just rub it in you guys. I am house sitting all weekend and there is some chocolate peanut butter cup ice cream in the fridge but it is not mine to have. Pffft!

stanleybmanly's avatar

@Coloma anyone who leaves town with ice cream in the freezer knows what to expect upon their return. Is there a note on the carton forbidding your “investigation” of so exotic a flavor? It’s obvious that the ice cream was left for your enjoyment. Don’t insult your host by leaving any evidence of their gift for them to find on their return.

I plan to do nothing. I already had two donuts I should not have eaten. See, there was an Entenmann’s bakery shop right next to the car dealership I was at, and of course I had to go in. You know, one of those discount stores where most everything is on it’s last few days before the sell by date. I bought a bunch of bread items, and all of those went straight into the freezer, but not the donuts.

@JLeslie

Ever since Entennmans stopped making their fantastic Chocolate Blackout Cake, I’ve boycotted Ent. completely. I let them know this also.

Truth be told, all the rest of their stuff is pretty mediocre and not all that hard to pass up. Besides, all the rest of their product line is made by other companies as well.

They were the only ones with Blackout Cake in their lineup.

W don’t have ice cream here. Maybe some broccoli is identifying as ice cream. Well eat that seeing it would be the exact same thing. Delicious, sweet sweet ice cream on a stalk!

JLeslie's avatar

@Buttonstc The chocolate chip cookies are still fantastic. Although, my grandma liked Freihofer’s better. I think the Freihofer’s used darker cc bits. Entenmann’s is childhood to me, and way better than brands like Little Debbie. Entenmann’s is more East coast/Old country-ish.

The cashier told me Bimbo bought Entenmann’s, Sara Leigh, and some others. The Mexicans are taking over the country. ~ LOL.

jca's avatar

Entenmann’s makes a decent coffee cake with walnuts or pecans, although it’s gotten smaller recently. It’s like a ring shape.

Buttonstc's avatar

@JLeslie and @jca

I’m still too mad at them for discontinuing the Blackout cake to even consider spending any more money on them.

The thing I liked about it most was that the middle layer was chocolate pudding, hence not so sickeningly sweet as regular icings are nowadays.

This way you could really taste the chocolate flavor without being so completely overwhelmed by the sugar.

I miss it to this day. Grrrr.

Coloma's avatar

@stanleybmanly Haha, I did have a few spoon fulls, just a few. lol

stanleybmanly's avatar

@jca around 15 years ago, I had a serious addiction to that pecan coffee cake. But now the entire Entenman’s line has disappeared from the shelves here and the local outlets closed down. It cheers me to know they’re still in business elsewhere.

JLeslie's avatar

@Buttonstc You’re entitled. I remember about 20 years ago my aunt called me and said she couldn’t find the Hershey’s dark in the gold foil wrapper anywhere anymore. She called Hershey’s, it was a big deal. Then the dark chocolate health craze started just in time.

My mom used to buy Royal Cook & Serve dark chocolate pudding. For a while it could only be purchased in 4 states. Her best friend used to send it from ME. Then it couldn’t be found there and my mom would buy a dozen through the mail. Then, it was completely discontinued. It’s a trauma for my family.

jca's avatar

@Buttonstc: I wonder if you could do a decent duplication by making a chocolate cake (even using a mix) and then putting a layer of chocolate pudding in the middle of the two layers.

Buttonstc's avatar

@jca

Most likely I could but the whole idea of buying Entenmanns (or any other brand) is the convenience factor. If I have to haul out all the baking pans, supplies, mixing bowls, etc. etc, it tends to take a toll :)

^^I just read on a few sites that the blackout cake is available during holidays. I have no idea if that’s true. Here is the Entenmann’s website if you want to look through it or call. When I lived in TN the only Entenmann’s available were the mini-bites and a few donut flavors. No cookies and no cakes. I called, and the distributors in my area just didn’t have the other items. When Hostess went out of business, finally more Entenmann’s selection, but I moved shortly after.

One thing to note, I bought a cake a year ago and it was less cake than I remembered. Meaning thinner, not as good a cake to icing ratio.

Buttonstc's avatar

@JLeslie

I checked out their site via your link and if they are making any Blackout cake at all, they are making it a very well kept secret

I entered it into the search on their site and no luck at all. You’d think that even if they only made it available during holidays that they would note that somewhere. But no such luck.

But thanks for trying.

I have an announcement to make.

I just bought a pint of Ben & Jerrys ” Pistachio Pistachio” and am about to commence an ice cream party for one. haha
It hit about 85 today, still very warm and I am indulging in ice cream for the 1st time in forever thanks to this question. :-)

P.S. I also put snow cones in my avatar as I will be seeking out a snow cone next. lol

Today I was craving a good old fashioned ice cream sandwich. Not the fancy round cookie kind, just the regular old rectangular ones. I didn’t get to have one, but it’s on my list to be the next dessert I have if I have dessert.

Buttonstc's avatar

I’m never lacking for high quality, freshly made ice cream (the real deal, frozen custard) at this place. Ever changing Flavor of the day and literally right around the corner for me.

So smooth and creamy. Absolutely delicious. Basically like the Carvel I remember from my childhood.

Not to brag, but this place is about 20 minutes from my house. They make only ice cream, so you are not going there to buy milk or anything. The cows are right there, and at night they take them across the road to put them back in the barn. The child size cone is a good size scoop (or of course you can get it in a cup), and it’s less than $3. The “regular” size cone is two big scoops. They make shakes and they have some good sundaes which I’ve never had because the ice cream on a cone or cup is enough.

@jca At my university we had ice cream stores on our campus with milk from our campus cows. It was really good. Inexpensive also for the quantity you got. I don’t know if the prices are competitive now, I rarely eat ice cream out. Here’s a link

They sell by the cone, but I don’t see that price online.

Jeruba's avatar

@JLeslie, those old rectangular ice cream sandwiches are still the ones I like the best. If the cookies are too firm and crunchy, they ruin it. They have to be soft and soggy to just the right degree.

I also like old-fashioned Eskimo Pies better than any fancy ice cream bar.

I can still find both of these in my supermarket freezer, and sometimes even at Walgreen’s.

JLeslie's avatar

@Jeruba I didn’t grow up eating Eskimo Pies, we had Good Humor on a stick. I will say the Dove chocolate covered ice cream, which is an Eskimo Pie copy, is very good in my opinion.
