Top Sheet: Under the pillows or over the top?

Asked by rojo (24179points) August 11th, 2017

Should the top sheet go under the pillows or over them when the bed is made up? Does it make a difference if there is a bedspread as well?
On all beds but a single, should the openings of the pillow cases face the outside of the bed or toward the center?

For me it’s not a matter of “should,” only one of energy. Under when I’m feeling lazy, over when I’m feeling peppy.

Most days, under.

Neither over or under the pillows. Fold the top sheet back to be even with the edge of the pillows. Same with the blanket.

Tuck an inch of the bed spread under the pillows, then fold it over the pillows to cover them up.

This all changes if you are like my girlfriend with bunches of decorative pillows on the bed.

The pillow case openings face each other at the center of the bed. On a twin bed with one pillow, the opening faces away from the side one uses to get into bed.

Right, @zenvelo. That’s the way my mother taught me and how I do it when I say “over.”

In a hotel? Or, at home? Thank goodness hotels have gotten away from bedspreads, but if you happen upon a hotel that has one, and the bedspread goes over the pillows, I would want the sheet over the pillows, so the bedspread doesn’t touch the pillow. Most states require a bedspread or blanket be washed every 3 months!

At home, I think the custom is to have the sheet and blankets folded over beneath or just in front of the pillows.

Most people use comforters and duvets now. Hotels that use blankets without duvet covers should be triple sheeting.

Edit: I put my pillow with the open side out, but I have no idea what the “rules” say.

The pillows are on top of the “cake”. It works out that way because they’re tossed out of the way while the bed is made, and restored last.

Next thing you’ll ask about is whether the toilet paper should be mounted bottom feed or top feed.

JLeslie's avatar

^^Dont start that. We all know it’s over the top.

zenvelo's avatar

@JLeslie We all know what you just stated is wrong!

Let me check that.
Be right back….

Waiting patiently on @rebbel‘s return.
Pillows on top and toilet paper over the top.

rojo's avatar

Really? Pillows on top?
I just think about getting into bed. With the pillows on the bottom I pull back the top blanket/bedspread or whatever along with the sheet all in one motion and my bed is ready to use. If I put the pillows on top then they have to be moved or put back into place after the sheet is removed from under them. Unless you do magic tricks like pulling the tablecloth out from under the dishes type thing.
And I think the pillow opening should face the inside because it keeps cats from crawling into them BUT it bothers me because if you do it the other way the excess material can be smoothed out nicely instead of bunched up the way it ends up in the center.

I go by how beds are made for advertisements, which is pillow openings toward the outside of the bed and sheets/blanket/comforter folded over so the edge ends just where the pillows start.

Pillows in hotels are now either standing straight up, looking decorative, or they’re laying flat and the blanket/comforter is folded as described above. I find now hotels will have more than two pillows on a bed. Maybe 4 or 5 pillows so you can prop yourself up for reading or TV.

Toilet paper? I finally decided to go with over since that is what the patent documents show….

chyna's avatar

That looks kind of messy to me.

si3tech's avatar

@rojo I like sheets under the pillows and pillowcase opening facing outside of bed. (2)

My sheet and comforter aren’t long enough to go over the pillow, so I always lean it up against the headboard. My comforter set also came with a bunch of decorative pillows which will effectively cover my sleeping pillow. I thought were pretty at the time, and they are, but they have to get taken off the bed at night and put back on the bed in the morning. It’s gotten old.

And toilet paper is over the top unless you have a pet that finds unrolling it a lot of fun. Then it’s bottom feed.

jca's avatar

@chyna: Yeah that bed has a lot going on. I’m guessing they wanted to showcase all of the products from that line in one place, in one photo.

Under, but, I don’t use a top sheet. I have not used a top sheet in years and years. I use a fitted bottom sheet and then a lightweight velour blanket over the top with another quilted coverlet on top of that. In the winter I add another blanket under the comforter/quilt.

CWOTUS's avatar

Who uses toilet paper? I thought that’s what the top sheet was for.

anniereborn's avatar

people still make their beds?

Coloma's avatar

^ haha…well I guess not everybody does but I like to get into a made bed and it looks nice too. Something about climbing into a rumpled bed is not appealing.

JLeslie's avatar

Lol. I only make my bed about twice a week.

Zaku's avatar

I don’t use that sort of sheet, except as an only blanket when it’s hot. But in any case, under the pillow seems silly unless you want to be able to sit and bounce on the bed without the sheets opening, for some reason.

Coloma's avatar

@JLeslie well…there are some days here and there I don’t make it or not until later in the day because my cat is so comfy I don’t want to move him.

JLeslie's avatar

@Coloma My mom never would have let me move the cat to make my bed!

YARNLADY's avatar

I put both the sheet and the bedspread over the pillows. This is to keep the dust off (used to be dog hair, but I have no pets left), and also because I need the sheet long enough to pull over my shoulders when I sleep.

rebbel's avatar

Huuuuuuuuuuuuuoooouuuaaaaaaahaaa…..

Under.

rojo's avatar

@rebbel took a while eh? Um, TP or sheets or both?

rebbel's avatar

Just a sec…....

chyna's avatar

^Oh gawd, the first time took forever…

Dutchess_III's avatar

Well, under. If you put it over the top it makes it difficult to then tuck the bed spread under the pillows. There isn’t enough give in the top sheet.

@rebbel…....

kritiper's avatar

You shouldn’t make your bed. During the day, dust mites scatter in an unmade bed and take time to regroup when you return, but remain in the same place they were when the bed is made, ready to welcome you again, en masse, immediately.
Sweet dreams!

NomoreY_A's avatar

A bed by any other name, is still a bed. Top or bottom, over, under, I don’t give a crap. Cant worry bout formalities when the sand man comes around.

johnpowell's avatar

For fun I took a pic of where I will sleep in 30 minutes.

Enjoy

And yeah. The TP is there for morning wood wanking!

rojo's avatar

^^ maybe I should have asked “Sheets on floor or sheets on bed?”

ucme's avatar

You would have to ask our housemaid Candy but having said that she’s instructed not to fraternise with riff-raff so I guess your question will remain a house secret.

rebbel's avatar

Back.
Guess what….?!

AshlynM's avatar

I usually don’t bother making my bed. But if I do, I just throw the top sheet over the pillow.
