What do you consider to be the best hour of television right now?

Asked by jonsblond (43741points) May 20th, 2018

My vote is for Westworld.

Ask me this in October and it will probably be Vikings.

Ask me next year at this time and it will most likely be Game of Thrones.

What are you watching as it airs? What are your favorites?

Can we talk Westworld? omg

Sorry I prefer shows like Brokenwood, or Death in Paradice.

Never apologize for what you enjoy. I’ll have to look up your choices @SQUEEKY2. Maybe I’ll like one of them.

I’m still pissed that Mozart in the Jungle was cancelled. One of the best shows I’ve seen in a while. Oh well. If it’s not a reality show or loaded with blood and gore, it can’t go too far, I guess.

I haven’t seen Westworld yet, but I think I’m going to have to. :)

Broken wood is a detective show shot in NewZealand , and Death in paradise is British show shot in the Caribbean.

“Call the Midwife” on PBS. I cry every week.

I really like Madam Secretary.

I like Designated Survivor too, but I heard it was cancelled, which I just don’t understand.

Also, I want to give a mention to 60 Minutes. Did you see the story on Theranos? OMG. The CEO should be in jail. I hope 60 Minutes does more and more stories on all facets of healthcare.

Homeland. Game of Thrones.

Genius. It’s a mini series group of shows. Right now it’s Pablo Picasso. Several months about it was Albert Einstein. Both are good, but the Einstein was best.

There is so much to watch I have pretty much taken to marathoning seasons once they have finished airing. I watch sitcoms and reality TV as they air.

The only drama I really watch right after I can download it is Mary Kills People.

There is so much to watch and you are all giving me more options. I’m intrigued by a few. Thanks!

Westworld is pretty good.

I think The Expanse is at least as good, though I’ve only seen season 1.

The Good Place is pretty amusing.

Crazy Ex Girlfriend is a very funny musical phenomenon.

There are several other good ones whose titles aren’t coming to mind at the moment…

Hmm, I think Better Call Saul might be what I’d think of as the highest-quality recent TV show I’ve seen.

jonsblond's avatar

^I agree with you about Saul. It will be my favorite when it returns.

Hinamatsuri on Crunchyroll.

Another vote for Call the Midwife (although this last last season was really rough! So many weeps!)
Also a vote for Death in Paradise, delightful!
On broadcast TV, I’ve really liked Instinct, but I am a big fan of Alan Cummings.

Too many choices, I get confused…

The Expanse—best Sci Fi series I’ve ever seen. It’s going to be cancelled if something doesn’t change so if “Game of Thrones in space”—set in a fairly realistic future has any appeal, go binge watch the first few episodes and help get the numbers up! There’s no transporters, lightsabers, weird alien species, talking robots, or other more fantastical elements (though there are some). It’s a more gritty, realistic depiction of humanity after we’ve begun colonizing Mars and the asteroid belt. What makes it so great is how human the series is and how well they’ve developed the different cultures. It feels like a lived-in world that’s very believable.

Better than Star Trek, Stargate, Farscape, or Babylon 5?
Blasphemy and madness.

Game of Thrones.
Yes, there are no new episodes for a year, but even the reruns are better than anything else.

@ragingloli Give it a shot. I think it’s pretty incredible. As I said before, there’s a humanity to the story that does an exceptional job of building round characters with competing motivations and complex emotions. The tech at times drives the story, but it’s ancillary to the story and blends into the background really well—a feature of the best science fiction IMO.

It’s rated high on Rotten tomatoes, so I’m certainly not the only one.

Genius at Tuesday night on Nat Geo. Also Real Time with Bill Maher on HBO.

The Voice has been my live on air favorite for the last 7 years or so. It comes on twice in each year, moves fast, is over before I know it, short break & repeats the process. I can’t sing a note worth hearing so I appreciate those that can. Being a allowed to vote for my favorite, I get an emotional attachment. I love music & I find it entertaining even when their genre of music isn’t in my wheel house.

My cable company haa included MeTV & CoziTV which are the old classic shows from my youth. That’s what I watch most of the time; so I watch very little live on air except for about 10 weeks twice a year. Boring for most; but, it works for me. I can enjoy my time on Fluther while listening to my favorite classics & not miss what’s happening on the storyline & still be on top of what’s happening here….a trick I learned in my teens while dating!!!

I have not yet read the other answers, will do so after posting.

One show that has been on for years, but takes long hiatuses in between seasons, is still my favorite. Sherlock.

Two new shows that just finished up their first seasons that I love are: Rise, a show about the trials and tribulations of a high school drama class, starring Josh Radnor, formerly of How I Met Your Mother; and Instinct, a sleuth show set in NY, starring Alan Cumming as an American.

And two hilarious old favorites that have recently been reprised: Will and Grace, and Roseanne.

janbb's avatar

@Kardamom I love “Sherlock “ too.

No one’s mentioned “This is Us” yet. I think it’s really well done.

LadyMarissa's avatar

For me the question “What are you watching as it airs?” cuts back on my response. I love Bull; but choose to binge watch on streaming after the fact so I can watch when it’s more convenient for me. I watch Roseanne the same way. I binge on Criminal Minds on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon. So I do very little “as it airs” watching. I tried binging with The Voice but it loses some of its excitement when I’m not emotionally involved.

First pick? GOTHAM.
Second choice? MARVEL: Agents of S. H. I. E. L. D.

flutherother's avatar

Right now it would be A Very English Scandal. A light hearted look at a famous British political scandal. Hugh Grant is very good in it. I’m looking forward to the next episodes.

The only shows I have seen this year are “Wheel Of Fortune” and “Jeopardy”. I like to play along and keep score. April 18. 2018. I won $62,400 on “Jeopardy”.

Well I just found out they cancelled Rise : (
