How do I pack a suit?

Asked by MrItty (17406points) October 20th, 2008

I’m going to a wedding this weekend, and have to fly to get there. Is there any decent way to pack my suit so that it’s still wearable without sending to the dry cleaners once I get there?

For starters, borrow a suiter. That’s what they’re made for. No wrinkles when you get there. You might want to invest in a travel steamer, too.

very carefully…?

And with the suiter, you can hold the suit in the full length position if you want and I remember airlines allowing you to hang them up in a closet on board. For the entire trip, the suit never has to be folded in any way but, instead, can remain as it is on a hanger in your closet.

Likewise your dress shirt.

Suiter aka garment bag.

yes, hang it, don’t put it in a suitcase. not every airline has a place for you to hang it though which i learned when trying to bring a dress to a wedding. I ended up getting it steamed at a tailor and they didn’t even charge me for it….. so…either use the hanger on the plane, hang it on the seat in front of you, or get it steamed once you arrive. If you are staying in a nicer hotel they might have a steamer too but you should call.

Hanging is good.
Unless you are carrying it in a way that crushes it, you won’t likely need a steamer either.

Suiter is a style of suitcase. Garment bag I think can be what you get from men’s stores when you buy a new suit. I’ve seen men bring suits in garment bags, too, actually. But I’m talking the suiter suitcase that allows you to hang it up and carry it full length, OR fold it over. You’d put ALL you stuff in it, including shirt, sox, shoes, etc.

I pack mine when I put my pants on.

the wrinkles don’t go away, but you can’t see them.

My only carry-on is a Skyway garment bag.

It has never let me down, and since it holds three changes of clothes, has gotten me through lost luggage crises multiple times. I never fly without it.

Lay it out flat on your bed, the roll it up like a cylinder the long way, not too tight, then curve it around the outer edge of your suitcase, be sure to fill the inner part with clothes or towels or something so it doesn’t move around in there.
