It depends on what country/school district you are in, but usually in the U.S. it is 5 by a cetain month with the cutoff month varying from district to district. Some parents will wait and start their kids at 6 if they are a “young” five.

Yeah, the first day of the month after a child’s fifth birthday. And you can probably look at Wikipedia for whatever country you’re in as well.

In practise, though, children in the Netherlands start school after their fourth birthday.

There’s a “law on” everything else parents and kids do, so probably — for public (taxpayer-supported) schooling.

OTOH, you can start homeschooling a child from the time his eyes focus. And IMO, that’s the best start to school there is.

In Indiana, the minimum age for kindergarten is 5, but there is a “cut-off date” to make that. If you are born after the cut-off, you have to begin at age 6. I was a 10 month baby, and my mother scheduled her c-section so that I would technically be born just before the cut-off. Therefore, I was always “young” for my grade.

Here it is the September of the year in which your kid will turn 5 (so someone born in 2004 would have to go next September, regardless of whether they were born in January or December).
I am not 100% sure though.

@Jack79 That’s right. My daughter was born Jan. 2004. She needs to wait until this September to start school. She will be one of the older kids in class. My son was born in August, so he was a young 5 when he started school.

If the child has just turned 5 right before the cutoff date (usually early Sept.), you sometimes have the option of keeping them home for that year if you feel that he/she isn’t quite ready.
