Birth control has changed women's views of their likeness of masculine men?

Asked by Ansible1 (4841points) October 29th, 2009

article here

This article says over the past 40 years the hormones in birth control pills suppress women’s interest in masculine men and make boyish men more attractive. Do you feel like there is any truth to this?

Maybe. Yet in the 1750’s men wore lace and wigs… so perhaps what’s wrong with this logic is what we deem ‘masculine’ and feminine.

And if that’s true- then why are the men on romance novels still beefcake?

JONESGH's avatar

The ladies love my boyish charm.

dpworkin's avatar

The technical response in academia to that theory is “horse puckey.”

Capt_Bloth's avatar

In the 80’s trendy guys looked like women (Prince, Boy George)

Oh good christ. Having read the original journal article and discussed it at length with several very good neuroendocrinologists, I am comfortable saying that this newspaper article completely missed the fucking point.

SeventhSense's avatar

Well if this guy is more attractive than this guy then I would agree. Ladies?

pinkparaluies's avatar

I’ve read that before. Thankfully I’m not on BC. I love a manly man :P

I always marvel that a theory like this is being funded (probably by tax dollars) when there are so many puzzles that have immediate impact on my life, such as cancer cures, pollution and on and on. Someone ought to tell these guys that different women like different men.

@SeventhSense – I think they are both pretty nice. Justin should let his hair grow a little though, I am not wild about his do.

DominicX's avatar

@SeventhSense

Oh man, Justin is CUTE. :)

What about me? I’m an effeminate gay guy and I’m into soft sweet (yet still athletic) guys like my current boyfriend.

SeventhSense's avatar

Well it’s probably has a lot to do with where you’re at in life-man or woman. I’ve had varying tastes. Now I just like a sweet, dirty , maternal, intelligent, thoughtful edgy, submissive and forthright modern woman. :)

ItalianPrincess1217's avatar

I’ve been on bc for over 7 yrs now and I haven’t noticed a decreased desire for manly men. I still think they’re sexy :)

the100thmonkey's avatar

”‘It is a possibility – but there is no evidence of this yet,’”

Straight from the article.

It’s the Daily Mail. Why should the headline and general thrust of the story have anything to do with what is really the case?

mclaugh's avatar

I’m on birth control and have been for 6 years..I think my taste varies, I find some guys with skinny jeans hot but I think a tall muscular guy takes hotness to a whole other level. I like to feel protected and as much as I may think that a guy who’s 5’10, weighs 160 lbs and wears skinny jeans is sexy, I’d take the athletic tall guy over him(if I had to judge solely on looks-which is what we’re talking about here) because I like to feel like the smaller one in the relationship…so I think that that article is strait up bull-shit.

oratio's avatar

@gemiwing Well, they kind of didn’t wear wigs. The rich and noble did. But they were quite few.

aprilsimnel's avatar

No. I realize anecdotal evidence doesn’t count for much, but I’ve read of this postulate before and it doesn’t apply to me. I’ve never been on the Pill or any chemical contraceptive and the men I like tend to be boyish. Given a choice between, say, a 35-year-old Michael Palin and a 35-year-old Gerard Butler, Palin wins every time.

mclaugh's avatar

gerard butler is soo hot. much hotter than justin timberlake.

What is the idiot publishing this smoking?

Frankie's avatar

I’ve been on BC for four years and am definitely not into “boyish” men…just the term “boyish-looking men” makes me cringe. I’ve had roughly five boyfriends in the four years I’ve been on BC, and they are all very similar in body-type and “masculinity” as the three guys I dated prior to going on BC. So basically I think this study is hooey.

Capt_Bloth's avatar

@Frankie I hope it isn’t hooey. I’m a scrawny, boyish looking individual, I gotta have something going for me.

Since when is HUGH JACKMAN not rugged and masculine?

And since when do preteens who are too young to be on birth control (like those that like Zac Effron) have anything to do with adult women?

IDIOTS!

We should be careful here to differentiate between personal preference and empirically derived generalisations (that don’t apply to everyone).

The fact of the matter is that the generalisation isn’t justified (at the moment), so this is a non-story. There is, however, a hypothesis which is testable. I doubt that the results of later studies will receive the same kind of media and community attention.

@nikipedia Oh good christ. Having read the original journal article and discussed it at length with several very good neuroendocrinologists, I am comfortable saying that this newspaper article completely missed the fucking point. GA and lotsa lurve for that answer!

syz's avatar

@SeventhSense Example #1, yuck! Example #2, I’m constrained by the knowledge of what he looks like later in life.

fundevogel's avatar

@DominicX unless you or your significant other are on birth control I don’t think you need to worry.

aprilsimnel's avatar

@SeventhSenseOK, between those two, I’ll have the second. In fact, I’ll have seconds of that second. Thirds, even!

DominicX's avatar

@fundevogel Well, I was thinking of going off of it…we’ll see…

rooeytoo's avatar

@DominicX – hehehehe, don’t do anything rash!

Frankie's avatar

@Capt_Bloth Haha, well there’s girls out there who are into fun-sized, youthful looking guys…its just not my personal preference!

aprilsimnel's avatar

Heeheehee! “Fun-sized”!

avvooooooo's avatar

The size I think is fun… Teehee!

nikipedia's avatar

@avvooooooo: Now all I want to do is google pictures of Hugh Jackman instead of doing homework…

avvooooooo's avatar

@nikipedia I don’t think you realized how long it took me to stop looking at pictures of him long enough to post one. Especially those that have the shirt gaping open… Not the shirtless ones so much, but the ones with that tantalizing hint of skin and a little fur and things you can’t see… Oh, the things you can’t see! :D

Gonna go watch “Kate and Leopold” now!

rooeytoo's avatar

@avvooooooo & @nikipedia – you should see ole Hugh in Australia, he has some scenes with his shirt off. Not bad!!! and it is filmed in my back yard so the landscape scenery is pretty nice too!

avvooooooo's avatar

@rooeytoo The things I would do to that man… I can’t even post them, it wouldn’t be polite. Let’s just say that if I got ahold of him that you’d rarely see him out anymore, he’d be busy. :D

hungryhungryhortence's avatar

I took birth control pills for less than a decade and I didn’t notice any leanings one way or another.

the100thmonkey's avatar

I took birth control pills once, but that was because I thought they were E.

faye's avatar

HUGH JACKMAN, ohhh. what was the question? australia, tough, caring man, sigh. well, i guess i’m your proof- no birth control and i want this man, i’d almost settle for just listening to him talk while he rubs my back and…

faye's avatar

seriously, there have been studies that show if a women is near ovulation, she wants the best genetic material provider, and at a different time of her cycle she wants the understanding.man

Haleth's avatar

I’m sure it would be easy to find a bunch of pictures of boyish men from the 50s and 60s, and rugged men today, and make the opposite argument. It sounds like the author of this article started out with the conclusion already in mind, no matter what the evidence said.
