Would life be better if we lived on Pangea?

Asked by smack (1217points) November 4th, 2009

we briefly discussed pangea in my geology lecture today while covering ocean currents. it got me thinking about if life would be better if we lived on a massive supercontinent. thoughts?

australia is a massive super continent so if you want to see go there

don’t you already live on a massive continent?

supercontinent, supercontinent. there’d be no flying overseas; everyone would pretty much be all together. it might cause a lot of conflict, but it also might be so convenient…

sorry @smack i should have looked up pangea first. i’d hate to be the people in the middle. landlocked takes on a whole new meaning

It would be better for some travel because there would be no traveling overseas necessary, but I guess it depends on how much the geography varies. Roads would be super long. I don’t know much about Pangea, but if an entire ⅓ of it was desert or something, that might not be the best option. Also, with less inlets and bays, it seems there is less access to water. Not to mention if you lived in the center, it would take forever to get to a beach.

Pangaea would be great as long there wasn’t one single government governing everything.

@DominicX There would be bound to be huge lakes.

Think of how many fewer beaches there would be. No thanks, Pangaea.

@DominicX the waterfront would definitely be an issue. i feel as if the wealthy would make up the fringe of the continent, because shipping via boat would be useless (therefore no harbors).. while the less fortunate would be pushed inwards.

@smack Wouldn’t there be more massive hurricanes, typhoons, winds, and tropical cyclones?

Sarcasm's avatar

I wouldn’t want pangaea.
I don’t think having 90% of the “continent” being a desert would be a good idea.

sarx, quit bringin’ me down. what if it was all lush countryside?

Samurai's avatar

@smack Then it wouldn’t be Pangaea… wait, depends on the era.

I’d prefer isolated society’s, I guess we don’t have those anymore.

Well, I bet we’d have a better system of rails, for one! I like being on a train, but Amtrak is shite! I can’t believe what I had to pay for one of their “Deluxe” seats to Toronto, and just, no, never again.

smack's avatar

@aprilsimnel i was thinking the exact same thing! i get to take an overnight train from williamsburg to boston this december… pretty excited. have to pay through the nose for it, but trains are much more reliable in the winter than airplanes.

No, I need there to be a beach close by!

Who knows, but I think you should write a song about it. You can call it: Would life be better if we lived on Pangea?

Psychedelic_Zebra's avatar

I think it would suck, because there are some people it is nice to have an ocean between them and me.

NewZen's avatar

@Psychedelic_Zebra Wish there wasn’t one between us – we’d hang out a lot and drink beers and eat Aronia nuts – watching the Yanks take the WORLD SERIES – AROOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Side: this is a psychic prediction, as it hasn’t happened here yet – so I don’t know the final score.

Psychedelic_Zebra's avatar

@NewZen yeah the people I wish there wasn’t an ocean between them and me there is, and the people I wish there was, there isn’t.

smack's avatar

@NewZen I wish there was an ocean between me and Yankees fans.

Continental climates can be a challenge. Now project this to the supercontinental climate of one supercontinent. Believe me, you don’t want to live in the interior.
