Girls, have you ever called a boy by his formal title instead of his first name?

Asked by peter29 (50points) May 31st, 2010

Did you say “Mr.” or “Master”? How old was the boy? What were the circumstances, e.g. was it verbally or in writing?

I call my son “Young Master (lastname)” whenever he’s not listening to me. Does that count?

Oh, and when I addressed wedding invitations, any boy that still lived in his parents house was “Master”. I don’t know how correct that was, but that was my assumption.

I call a lot of my guy friends “sir” and “mister” but not formally, they are just things I add to sentences out of habit. I also call my girl friends “lady” and “ma’am” so who knows.

Long time ago, I had a girlfriend I called Miss Susan.

A boy, a child? No, not when I was a kid. I have done so as an adult to a small nephews, ~6 or so, as in “Listen, Mister, you stop pulling that cat’s leg right this instant!

I say Mister to my son when yelling at him. When he gets cards sent to him, they say Master.

When I worked in the infant department at Bloomingdale’s many grandmothers addressed gifts to their grandsons as Master XXXX. I have never used Master myself. I will use Mr. and Miss. or Ms. for young children when addressing a letter or package through the mail, but not always. Verbally I never use the term with children, but I will address them as young ladies or gentleman if they are over the age of 12 more or less.

I never say Mister. I don’t really believe that strangers that I don’t know deserve to be blindly respected like that.
Also, I know a lot of guys that think its “cute” to call women “miss”. It isn’t cute.

@meagan Are you saying that even with adults you don’t use Mister or Ms last name? And, what do you mean by you don’t think it is cute to call women Miss? Are you talking about someone they know, or someone they don’t know, like “excuse me Miss.”

meagan's avatar

@JLeslie Nope. Not even with adults. And some young men I know, think that its cute to put Miss on the front of your name. I get “Miss Meagan” all day. My vagina doesn’t rule my life. And I especially don’t appreciate men thinking that its “cutesy” to call me little pet names. Or they’ll casually call me Miss (last name) in every day conversation. Its just a little fad or something that really strokes me the wrong way. Thats what I get for being raised by a bunch of feminists, I guess. ;P

@meagan I only hear Miss first name in the south, and it drives me crazy. But, that is not to be cute, people here think that is respectful. I am guessing you are younger than me, so I would not be aware of this as a fad.

not a girl buttttttttttttttttttt
I call people mr (first name) or sir all the time but as IBERnineD does, its not in a formal way in the slightest, just something i do in a somewhat humorous way.

How funny, @meagan… I used to get mad when people would call me “ma’am”, when I was still a single girl. I thought “If you’re going to use such archaic forms of address, at least use the right one.”
