What is the best way to gain weight?

Asked by erichw1504 (26453points) August 7th, 2009

All my life I have been very skinny and have gotten to the point where I’m sick of it. I’ve tried many things, like eating more, lifting weights, and protein powder. I’d like to gain at least 20 pounds (mostly muscle). What are some good techniques or things to try that will shock my body into gaining weight?

I agree. Lots of cheese, red meats, and breads.

it really is just working out and eating A LOT.

I used to go to school at USF and was friends with this football player named George Selvie, he plays DE there. he was too skinny a couple years ago (granted too skinny by those standards was 220 pounds) but in order to gain weight he worked out three times and a day, and ate 5 full meals and 3 snacks every day. we shot up 20 pounds in about 5 months.

20 pounds of muscle is a lot to put on, no matter who you are, it’s going to take a while, but the most important thing is to stick with it as long as it takes.

I know your pain. I have always been of the slim body type. Almost 20 yrs ago, I tried weight lifting, protein powders, extreme high calory diets, etc. It all seems to stem from having a high metabolism. Find a way to lower your metabolism, and you’ve got it made.

20 years later, and I am still tall and slim, but have started putting weight on around my middle. Not where I want it, but I guess the only way I’ve found to slow my metabolism is to get old. Hardly what you were looking for. =)

you essentially have to out race your metabolism. even if it’s high, eat 10000 calories a day if you have to while working out two or three times, if that’s what it takes that’s what it takes

Proper weight training and chowing down on healthy, protein-y foods.

Sorry to digress… When I was 13, I wanted to play football more than anything in the world, and I was 90 pounds. You needed to weigh-in at 100 to make the roster. So, I did nothing but eat bananas and peanut butter sandwiches. When the day of the weigh-in arrived, I checked myself on the scale at home. 102. I was pumped. Ready to go. I walked slowly to the car, so as not to expend any precious ounces on the way to judgement. We arrived, it was August, air conditioning was a luxury back in the day, and I was sweating profusely. Panic. I stood in line with all of those doughy teenagers easily tipping the scale in their favor and grew silent. My moment came. I pressed my feet hard into the pedestal of the ultimate measuring machine and let my entire body hang as heavy as possible. Hearing a couple of grunts and humm’s being uttered within the room about me I raised my head to see the enormous round dial peering down at me, with the guillotine-like needle quivering around 99.7, and my heart sank. A man approached me, a man bigger than the machine itself. He was to be my executioner, I knew it. My hard work, all the bananas, the peanut butter, driving my family crazy with this obsession of gaining weight had now arrived at the one moment I feared the most. Rejection. The man grabbed my arm, my knees buckled, a tear erupted in the corner of my eye, I opened my mouth to speak, and… nothing came out. He placed a football helmet in my hand, curled my arm around it and pushed it close to my chest and said, ” you have to wear a helmet if you want to be on this team!” And with that I looked up at the scale as I heard him shout, “102! Next!” I put on my helmet, went to the next line to fill out the papers, and immediately lost 8 pounds as a result of my heart beating 285 beats per minute. I didn’t care, my face froze in a clown-like grin that lasted the entire football season.
So, for anyone who lingered long enough to read the above, I know the question that started this memory of mine might not be scientifically answered, but, isn’t that what fluther is all about?
A question is an opportunity. And also, don’t we all love bananas and peanut butter?

I have found since I upgraded from basic cable to the whole can of worms.
(I will be going back to basic)

I am on the couch too often, always something “good” to watch.
Since I am chilling on the couch, Hmmm lest get a snack, or let’s eat in front of the TV.
Ahhh, that feels Good. Now I will fall asleep on the couch.

Now I am awake, what? Oooo interesting show. Let me grab a snack, and kick back.

The best way to gain weigh is to do nothing, except eat. Yummy fatty, cheesy, creamy and sweet things. Sure fruit is always good after a cheese burger and with a bowl of french vanilla ice cream.

I am a naturally skinny guy too. I went from 178 to 195 in about 7 months last year. I’m now maintaining around that.

It’s all about eating A LOT of the right kind of calories every 2.5 – 3 hours and lifting in the gym for about 45 minutes three times per week.

When I say a lot, I mean it. When bulking, I eat close to 4,000 every day and I’m about 190 lbs. You need high quality protein like chicken, carbs such as brown rice and whole grains, and healthy fats like those found in natural peanut butter and almonds.

Your lifting should consist of compound, free weight exercises like squats, deadlift, bench press, etc.

This is the program I have purchased and used with great success. You can buy a guide designed for helping skinny guys, or search the internet and make your own. It’s up to you.

There isn’t any way to “shock” you body into gaining weight.

You gain weight when you eat more calories than you use. So, you have to do a bit of calculation on how many calories you are consuming through exercise, and purposely consume 1000–2000 calories more than that per day.

The trick is to consume those carbs in healthy foods, olive oil, peanut butter and other nuts, eggs, cheese and avoid the empty high calories of sugary foods.

Yeah, I had this problem 20 years ago. Ended up eating sweets and chocolates all the time. It was great fun and I did gain weight. Now I can’t lose it.

Eat pasta and mexican food al the time and ice cream and meat. And drink lots of pints of guinness. Pints of guinness make you strong.

If you use an iPhone, get a free app called LoseIt. It’s a calorie-counter, and you can set it to whatever amount of calories you want to intake per day and add info for different foods. I look most thins up on the internet if it doesn’t come in a package with a label (exmple: Google “banana calories”). I use it to make sure I eat enough calories; people I know who use it to lose weight says it helps with that too. It’s just a good way to become aware of how many calories which foods have, and how much you are actually getting into your diet.
