What are some things that you thought were so cool in the past that now embarrass you?

Asked by wtfrickinfrack (1354points) March 3rd, 2010

For instance… my parents have a home video of me performing a dance routine to this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jEa1BYBgeQI

And my bedroom used to be a shrine to this:

What about you guys? :/

Wearing clothes that don’t fit. I can’t believe I used to do that, and I feel bad for all the teens now that do it.

Jude's avatar

My love of Kirk Cameron (I was 12) who has since turned into a religious freak.

My Batman one-sy I just refused to give up!

Backstreet Boys and ‘N Sync.

My Prince poster- of him wearing a tiny banana hammock.Actually,I am not ashamed! Owwww wah! lol!

rangerr's avatar

Wait.
Your Power Rangers shrine embarrasses you?
Do you know how cool that is?

I’m not sure that I’m embarrassed by anything that I used to like.
Most things, I’ll still watch/listen to.. I refuse to deny that I like(d) something because of what other people have to say about it now. I am what I am.

My room is still a shrine to Star Wars.

jealoustome's avatar

Singing/rapping along to “Hangin’ Tough” and “Too Legit to Quit.”

Sarcasm's avatar

Well, nothing. I always was cool, and I will always continue to be cool, absolutely.
That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.

I used to love Backstreet Boys, I used to think wearing that small black mesh necklace around my neck was cool, I used to think blue eyeshadow was the shit…man, there are so many things….I used to collect Spice Girls stickers and I had the Titanic poster in my room…

Dr_Dredd's avatar

My shrine to all things Star Trek. I still love the show, I just wouldn’t admit to having a shrine. :-)

Oh I have a long list. I used to cut my hair very short and live in doc martins. Once my bedroom was black red and white (yak). I loved loud music in my car and had a boom box, that was last year lmao. I also used to bleach my hair, wear it in a long white plait with a beret, long black gloves and cocktails dresses. I used to get so drunk in dodgy bars that I drank the other peoples drinks that were sitting next to me. I never had a shrine as such but I was tagged as a look alike a few times, Madonna, Annie Lenox and Brigitte Nielson so I thought I was them. When it suited me. Oh so many, so many best forgot. Now I am just an old fart loll.

bhec10's avatar

Forgot to mention that I worshiped Britney Spears. Bad times

tedibear's avatar

Listening to the Bangles and the Go-Go’s.

Jude's avatar

@tedibear39 I still love ‘em

MissAnthrope's avatar

@jjmah – OMG, you too? Hahahahaha… so glad I’m not the only one. God, I had such a thing for Kirk Cameron, like I think I even proudly journaled about how many posters of him I had in my room. Gag. And then he turned into a religious freak, which just makes the whole thing even more embarrassing.

Other things.. my attempts at perms.. just so bad, so bad. Parts of my hair refuse to be permed, so I’d have 98% curly hair with straight tendrils. I thought they were cool and grown-up, but perms, ugh.

There was a time in the early ‘90s when fluorescent clothing was in style, and I wholeheartedly embraced the trend. I loooooved the fluorescent clothing, so much so that after a school field trip to see Dances with Wolves, my peers were giving each other “Indian names” and mine was “She Whose Clothing Blinds Me”. Ohhhyeah.

@tedibear39 – Hey, the Bangles and the Go-Go’s are still cool, are you kidding me? ;)

tedibear's avatar

@MissAnthrope – Really? I missed that memo!

I forgot to mention there were a couple of Bananarama songs I liked.

drClaw's avatar

CareBears. No one ever told me they were for girls.

Tomagotchis. Oh. My. Goodness….those are SO stupid! They were all the rage in my circle of friends back in the summer of ‘06.

rangerr's avatar

@ChocolateReigns ‘06? Oh man. They were all the rage way before that.. I still have most of mine from ‘96.

Simone_De_Beauvoir's avatar

@ChocolateReigns yeah I had mine in 96 as well and I will never be embarrassed about ‘em – they were awesome

Your_Majesty's avatar

The same like @ChocolateReigns . Even after they’ve developed the digimon version.

ChocolateReigns's avatar

@rangerr Yeah…So does my brother (he’s 22). They came back for a little bit in the summer of ‘06…I think Walmart still has them, if you really go looking. @Simone_De_Beauvoir I wasn’t embarrassed about ‘em back then, but oh my goodness…they’re stupid! Who cares about a few black pixels on a screen?!

rangerr's avatar

@ChocolateReigns I just broke out my nostalgia box. I have 6 that still work. Who cares? ME! I was 6, and they were my babies. Now it’s just a time-killer. What you’re reading now is pixels on a screen, and you still care. [:

jonsblond's avatar

The Sweet Valley High books from the 80s.

I can’t believe I read that crap!

Jude's avatar

@jonsblond I did, too. Redonkulous.

Simone_De_Beauvoir's avatar

@jonsblond…and BabySitters Club! and Fear Street! hahahaha…I was awesome

I’m just old enough now to not feel embarrassed by anything I loved when I was younger.

FutureMemory's avatar

Nothing. My tastes stand the test of time.

If you were to ask what do i like now that other people think is silly/embarrassing… the list would be quite long.

Bluefreedom's avatar

A pair of fuzzy dice hanging from the rear view mirror in my automobile.

Arp's avatar

I used to be hugely (If that is a word) into Yu-Gi-Oh cards :D

I wish I realized how much money I wasted on that. That is the reason I don’t get into things like World of Warcraft

Sarcasm's avatar

@Arp There are plenty of reasons to avoid World of Warcraft, but the cost? $15/mo is pretty tiny.

stardust's avatar

@Just_Justine made me laugh :-) I used to wear tracksuit bottoms with buttons along the legs, starting from the hips. Oh dear! two-toned shimmering pants that looked like they were painted onto my legs. There’s so much. I’ll stop there

cak's avatar

Oh, wearing two pairs of socks, contrasting colors to match outfits. Mall bangs…yuck! Making my hair stand almost as tall as I am. I’m talking BIG 80’s hair! Jelly bracelets, the first time around. Jelly shoes, from the 80’s…especially in south Florida…heat, sweat and rubber shoes, just bad…really bad. Ever trying to use “valley talk” – Totally tubular! (really??) There were just a bunch of things from the 80’s that I should just never speak about, ever.

jonsblond's avatar

@cak You should look at my 80s pics on Facebook. Talk about big hair. Scary! lol

kyanblue's avatar

Neopets. I got all scientific midway through my obsession and tried to optimize my activities on the site for maximum virtual-currency earnings. I made spreadsheets.

I console myself these days by remembering how cool the site was before That Evil Entertainment Behemoth (Viacom) bought it out.

thriftymaid's avatar

The way I decorated my first apartment. Oh brother!!!

tinyfaery's avatar

I am embarrassed that I used to LOVE the Red Hot Chili Peppers. They suck sooo much now.

Jude's avatar

@cak Man, it’s good seeing you here.

MissAnthrope's avatar

@cak – Oh yeah, the big bangs! How could I forget? I used a curling iron to get them straight up with a bit of a curl back, then shellac into total stiffness with Aquanet. That is pretty embarrassing. P.S. good to see you here. :)

Arp's avatar

@Sarcasm That is definitely not the only reason, trust me ;)

tedibear's avatar

@kyanblue – don’t feel bad about that. I know people who have spreadsheets like that for Vampire Wars on Facebook.

@cak & @MissAnthrope – Mall hair! Me too! Worn with the fuschia shaker knit sweater, pinstriped jeans and highlighter yellow socks.

aprilsimnel's avatar

I said it before, and I’ll say it again: If I had the components, I’d wear my favourite outfit from my 16th year (V-neck Forenza shaker knit sweater worn backwards with a girly white t-shirt, Guess jeans with the zippered ankles and cute leather flats) today, and I’d be utterly, utterly cool in these parts.

And, yes, I said “tubular.” I mean, I was 12. I wish I knew my 12-year-old self now; she was a cool kid when she was in a safe place and felt free to be herself.

cak's avatar

@MissAnthrope what a cool name! I might be responsible for part of the whole in the ozone layer…I should have bought stock in AquaNet.

@aprilsimnel – OOOOH! I remember those sweaters, and the pants, too! I had that look going on, as well.

MissAnthrope's avatar

@cak – Thanks. :)

Okay, let me up the ante and show you guys what’s embarrassing. Oh yeah.

cak's avatar

@MissAnthrope oh wow! that is wonderful!

aprilsimnel's avatar

I had that jacket! Dag. It’s just so ugly. And that photo is all sorts of awesome!

MissAnthrope's avatar

@cak – Glad you think so. ;)

@aprilsimnel – Isn’t it just? I think it was so ugly that I blocked it out of my memory because I have no recollection of owning it. And thanks, it totally cracks me up on several levels. :)

But never fear, I am still that big of a dork!

Dr_Dredd's avatar

@cak I remember AquaNet. Once I used so much of it, it looked like my hair was shellacked!

cak's avatar

@Dr_Dredd oh, that was rough. Just running water over it and trying to get your fingers through to wash it was a pain in the rear!

Dr_Dredd's avatar

@cak Ah, the good old days! :-)

aprilsimnel's avatar

I think anyone who had a Jheri Curl in those days cringes thinking about it now… and of all the sofa cushions ruined by all the “activator” they had to spray on. And whenever I see a photo of a 90s fade cut, from any group of guys (Vanilla Ice had one too), I laugh and laugh.

DeanV's avatar

The music for sure. It took me a really long time to figure out that blink-182, Angels and Airwaves, and +44 just aren’t that great. Or that Travis Barker is not the best drummer on the face of the earth.
