Are UFO freaks able to be converted back?

Asked by rexpresso (922points) October 17th, 2010

This guy on facebook is trying to make me believe videos of UFOs above Xanghai etc. etc.

I didn’t even accept him by fear of him making crazy with my wall and friends…

He seems pretty convinced of it. Obsessively so, indeed.

He also says he’s really appreciating talking to me because I don’t push him away and give him intelligent points.

And a friend of mine even says he thinks he’s trying to bullshit me knowingly. But I’m not so convinced of this.

Have you ever known people you knew for certain that they really believed what they were saying and the videos and photos etc. they shown you?

Have you ever had a case like this in your life and managed to “bring back” someone from the delusion?

I think I’m gonna post in psychology only because I don’t wanna attract much attention from UFO believers :)

Hey are there many UFO-believing psychologists? Interesting thing to discover right now. Ahah.

For one, UFOs are unexplained phenomena and there is no conclusive evidence confirming or denying their existance.

I say that overall, it is probably best to ignore the person when he tries to tell you about UFOs. If he badgers you, then tell him “Sorry, but I’m just not interested in UFOs,” and leave it at that. Since the person has a strong opinion for UFOs, trying to dissuade him from his beliefs would likely just spark an argument that nobody would win.

The thing about belief, any belief, is how deeply personal it is and to call any one believer a ‘freak’ is unnecessary – same can be said about whatever it is your or your mother believes in and if anyone special to you is religious, well they are freaks as well.

Well I’m a freak too anyway…

Can the rest of the freaks chime in please?

Seriously @Simone_De_Beauvoir I have no trouble agreeing with you and letting go of the word “freak”.

But I would still like to study the idea of how to convert them back. And I think it has a lot to do with developing critical thinking. Which I can’t see how could it be a negative thing…

Maybe, maybe not. Probably not though, if you trust in Dale Gribble, and in Dale Gribble I trust.

Sometimes.

Other times, no.

Answer: I hope not. I’d hate to think believers are so unsure they’d just fall over and give up with the pointless arguments against the existence of UFO’s. by people who have a narrow minded view of the Earth’s inhabitants being alone in the universe. I’m proud to be a UFO freak! I like it! I also believe we walked on the moon. (-;
