What if any great items have you purchased at a dollar store?

Asked by jca (36062points) December 5th, 2010

Everyone seems to have a story of something great they purchased at a dollar store.

Have you ever purchased anything great at a dollar store, and if so, what?

Pop-Rocks and spatulas!! Dollar stores are great for finding fun off the wall things that under the right circumstances, can liven up any get together! ;)

OOooo! @Cruiser is right! Pop-Rocks. Couldn’t find them for years – for years, I say – and then, finally, miraculously, there they were, like water in a desert.

@papayalily “there they were, like water in a desert.” LOL you took the words right out of my mouth! PopRock ROCK!!

@Cruiser Every time they have them, I buy half to stock up. I want to buy them all, but then it would leave all the others without the miraculous Pop-Rocks. The fad had passed by the time I was born, so I still think they’re one of the best examples of man’s awesome power.

Stocking stuffers for my young nephews. They’re between the ages of 4 and 12 and they break anything anyway after a few days, so I got them cheap toys. They loved them, eventually they broke them, and I only paid 5 bucks for everything.

Things I bought this Christmas season so far: over-the-door wreath hangers, jingle bells to hang on doorknobs, styrofoam cups, large packs of white tissue paper, XL Christmas gift bags, and a loaf of Nature’s Own Honey Wheat bread (usually around $3.50)

Reading glasses! At the rate I tend to lose them, it’s nice to be able to buy and replace them for a dollar. And they’re perfectly fine unless you have a sight problem with a need for very different lenses for each eye or astigmatism etc. Perhaps I should re-word this. If you have eye problems that can be solved with reading glasses, the dollar store reading glasses are a great bargain.

Stainless steel bowls. Soup sized. We use them for everything from cookies to cereal. Bought them in Texas in 1999 and they’re still useful as ever!

I’ve bought loads of stuff at the dollar store. There’s the dollar store where everything is a dollar and then there is the “dollar store” which is kind of like a dollar store, but not everything is a dollar. It’s always great amusement to go in there and see what all kinds of random stuff they have. I almost always find something I need or can use for much cheaper than Target.

I’ve bought toiletries, cat food, cat litter, toilet paper, food, stocking stuffers, candy (Pop Rocks!), office supplies, stationery, kitchenware, off-brand ziplocs, tupperware… you get the picture.

I think my favorite thing that I ever found was this compact paper cutter for a dollar, with a replacement blade included. I really could have used it a few years prior to my finding it in the store, when I was making a lot of CD covers and having to trim down paper and photos a lot. Anyway, I saw the paper cutter and snagged it because I definitely know I’ll get good use out of it.

Once the 99 cent store had the large size Toblerone chocolate bars (normally $3) – YUM! – I bought 30. I ate most, made some into brownies.

I read your question, then before answering I went to refill my coffee cup. I looked around the kitchen and realized that it was tougher for me to find something that didn’t come from the dollar store! At a glance, here’s what I saw: Juice glasses, a spoon rest, straws, a straw holder, small bowls for feeding my cats wet food, kitchen timers, wine stoppers, wine glasses, plastic soup bowls (larger than those that came with my dishes – like @tsiv said, great for cereal or anything!), notepads, pens, a plastic bin I use for recycling, tealight candles, placemats, dishtowels, burner savers… Okay, I’m going to stop now.

There’s actually a dollar store downstairs, in the strip mall attached to my building. They’re open until 10 every night. I get a lot of stuff there. :)

A balloon animal kit. Came with pump, a bunch of long balloons and instruction manual on some easy and complex animals. Insane.
