How to save a mink teddy bear?

Asked by suncatt (715points) December 11th, 2010

I don’t think I would ever wear mink clothing, but I want to keep an old granny’s boa. (Maybe some day I will make a teddy bear out of it). It seems like moths could have dined on it; it is shedding a lot. Can it be taken care of or preserved in some way?
Thank you.

The only thing that occurs to me is replacing the oil. That’s what a live mink does. However, this boa may be beyond salvaging.

You can buy mink oil, which is the fatty layer between the mink’s skin and fur (is extracted without harming the mink, I understand). It is commonly used to soften leather boots, but may be just the ticket to rejuvenate your mink stole.

Thank you so much, Gailcalled! I have never heard of mink oil. I should give it a try!

Look up “furriers” in your general area. One of them may have some tips for you, or have a way to restore it (for a fee, of course).
