How do you boost your self esteem?

Asked by toolaura4ya (275points) April 11th, 2008 from iPhone

I’ve never liked the way I look so the core of my problem is strictly physical. How does one build up confidence and love themself no matter what? And… Not feel self concious that others are looking at all of your flaws.

you could try taking on a new sport. sometimes you just need to discover what your good at. i was feeling really down when i was younger, so i took up boxing and i was surprised at how good i was. its also good to improve your physical shape.

another thing you could do is start doing spontaneous things like walk into a crowded shopping mall and yell out something weird. after i do something that weird and people start looking at me strangely, i realize why they’re lookaing at me and i realize that the what people were looking at me before for, is nothing compared to what im doing now. when you yell PENIS in a crowded mall, you know the difference between the 2 types of stares.

Thanks for asking this question! I love it.

I am reading a great book right now called “Embracing Your Inner Critic: Turning Self-Criticism into a Creative Asset,” by Hal and Sidra Stone. I love it.

So my main answer for you is that the problem isn’t so much about self-esteem, but listening to your inner critic too much! (Now watch out – your inner critic may take hold of that and tell you’re listening to it too much! It will use anything!)

My quick advice would be to start listening to that voice of self-criticism. It says things like, “You’re too…” or “You’re not enough…” You could even write down what it says, or compare notes with a friend’s inner critic – that would help make it feels less personal and less destructive. Maybe even funny.

Hope that helps! My self-esteem is going up by the minute!
