Is it possible for a hen to lay two eggs at once?

Asked by Samsung (5points) February 12th, 2011

Is it possible for a hen to lay two eggs at once? Because I just had the most amazing thing happen. I just watched my hen lay two eggs at once…two eggs just popped out.

Has anyone ever seen that before? Thanks

The hen double ovulated and gave ‘birth’ to twin eggs.
It is not that unusual but often one egg will have a soft, unhardened shell.

I have had double yoked eggs, which is the equivilent of identical twins, your hen had fraternal twins. lol

not really relevant, but once in culinary school i got a triple yoked egg. Nuts

Seeing is believing, right? If you saw it, it’s gotta be possible. @Coloma has it right, though – twinning (both fraternal and identical) is possible in all species, as far as I know.

It happens, but it’s not deliberately bred for as hens that lay multiple eggs are more likely to become egg-bound.

crisw,

What do you mean by your statement? Please forgive me, but exactly what do you mean by, “it’s not deliberately bred for as hens that lay multiple eggs are more likely to become egg-bound.”?

Thanks.

Egg binding is when the eggs get stuck or trapped inside the hen. If not treated, it kills the hen.
