How can I get out of this ebay situation?

Asked by lbwhite89 (1213points) March 31st, 2011

I really want the Motorola i1 phone with Boost Mobile, but the price is too high for my blood. In stores with no contract (with it being Boost and all) it’s almost $400 while the price is half that with a Sprint contract purchase.

I went on ebay and found the phone for $255. I bid on it and am currently the highest bidder, but I’m having second thoughts. I’m guessing that I’ll be outbid by the time it ends (tomorrow at noon) but if I’m not, can I get out of it? I hate to be a horrible ebayer, but if I don’t pay will they just give it to the next highest bidder?

I want the it a lot, but $250 for a phone? It just might not be worth it right now.

Have the seller cancel your bid. You simply email the seller and state “I have changed my mind, please cancel my bid”.

Simple.

I have an ebay store

I think you can ask the seller to remove your bid. I imagine though this is up to them though. Hope you can retract. I use a bidding program so I can cancel my bid if I change my mind.

Definitely contact the seller before the auction is over. If you wait until it’s over and you win the auction and then don’t pay, they can leave negative feedback for you. Hopefully the seller will just cancel your bid and you won’t have to worry about it.

@Seaofclouds No, the seller can not leave negative feedback in any way shape or form. Ebay is ll for the buyer…no net for the seller.

You can back out of the purchase also @lbwhite89. However, ebay will put a strike against your account. They haven’t yet told sellers what the strikes mean, but I do think you only are allowed so many before they cancel your account.

It is in the best benefit of the seller’s to simply cancel your bid. Go do that now. The sooner you do it, the better the chance the seller can still sell their item.

@SpatzieLover Really? I always thought they could leave positive and negative feedback just as buyers can. They can leave comments though (I have tons of them and I only buy stuff), so can’t they make a comment about a buyer backing out at the last minute after winning the auction? I have never sold anything, so I just thought it worked the same way on the sellers end. Good to know it’s different (I guess).

For real @Seaofclouds. And at times, it honestly sucks. The only recourse we have is to open a case. That can count as a negative against us though we get better seller pricing if we have no cases so it’s better to just deal with it. If I get a crazy buyer, I block them. That way they can’t return to my store again.

We can only leave positive feedback. And, our comments are censored…that is irritating. You can’t state anything about not paying even if you leave a positive.

Wow, I didn’t know any of that @SpatzieLover. That all seems quite unfair.

I agree with @Mz_Lizzy. That definitely makes me glad I’ve only been on the buying end. I couldn’t imagine dealing with people backing out or anything like that and not being able to leave comments about it.

@lbwhite89 Have you checked back in on the auction or tried to contact the seller yet?

SpatzieLover's avatar

It is unfair. Especially if you get a zero rated buyer raid your store one day. Basically some kid can come in, click buy-it-now on a bunch of stuff and walk away. Then, I have to open an unpaid items case, or cancel the bids. :(

@everephebe Is it wrong that I lurve that so much?!

everephebe's avatar

@SpatzieLover Not at all. :D It’s only wrong if you don’t laugh when you read it, and instead ponder how you could pull off the same feat and get away with it. xkcd is great, even though some of it is over my head. Now before I sign, I ask the delivery person if they’ve heard any meowing or growling.

I was in the middle to contacting the seller when I was outbid on the phone. Whew!

SpatzieLover's avatar

@lbwhite89 Yipee! It’s probably the one & only time you’ll be glad you were outbid.

Now, if for some odd reason that buyer falls through you can decline to go through with the purchase.
