How do you get water spots off glass windows?

Asked by gondwanalon (22873points) April 2nd, 2011

The water spots were formed from the sprinkler systems mist hitting some large windows in our house that face the setting sun. The windows look good when the sun isn’t shining on them directly. But when the sun strikes them later in the evening they look bad. I tried windex and soap and water to no avail. Of course I don’t want to experiment with strong chemicals and chance causing damage.

Alcohol in a spray bottle and newspapers.

Alcohol and water for scrubbing first.

The only way to eliminate drops and streaks is to use a professional squeegee and lots of elbow grease. I just paid a guy a huge amount of money to remove streaks caused by salt I had put down on the deck above to remove the ice dams.

These come with a long wooden pole for tall windows.

Slightly damp newspaper should do the trick. It’s got something to do with the ink used in the printing. I use this for car windshields all the time.

There is a product for windshields, Rainx, that I use, it takes water spots off and keeps them from forming again. I live in a mountain area with lots of fog, mist and rain, it keeps my windows clear so I can see in these conditions. I started using it on my window at home, they look great.
