Has anyone here ever been to the House on the Rock in Spring Green, Wisconsin?

Asked by TexasDude (25274points) April 10th, 2011

I’m planning on taking a friend of mine up to Wisconsin to see the House on the Rock either in May or August. We’ve both wanted to go for a long time, and figured why the hell not. I wanted to ask here and see if any Flutherites have been there before and if there is anything I should know about the attraction or anything else in Southern Wisconsin I should plan to see (bars, freak shows, weird stuff, historical sites, whatever) Also, any Jellies between Tennessee and Wisconsin should chime in, in case we should meet up

I lived in Madison for a long time and have been there once. It is really cool, totally recommend it. But there is very little else in the way of fun in that part of WI that I’m aware of. Pretty rural. I would just recommend spending a few days in Madison, which is a very cool town. If you want to do that, let me know and I’ll send you to the good places.

@cockswain, awesome, thanks a lot. I’ll keep you posted as the trip gets planned!

@cockswain – I concur. There’s not much to do in that area.

If you like geology, @Fiddle_Playing_Creole_Bastard, there’s an ice age trail run by the National Park Service, and some of it runs through South Central Wisconsin. I used to go there at uni for both my biology and geology courses.

@aprilsimnel, that would be right up both of our alleys, actually!

Yeah, that trail is cool. Also Devil’s Lake is less than an hour from House on the Rock, which is a really chill place also.

@cockswain, I googled Devil’s Lake and it looks gnarly as hell. We are both outdoorsy types, so I’ll add that to our tentative itinerary. Thanks!

Wisconsin Dells is fun too – great water park and only about an hour’s drive from House on the Rock.

Been there 30 years ago it was fun. Went back about 10 years ago with the nephews, they’d turned it into a tourist trap, none of us enjoyed it. The Dells has plenty of things to do.

It is where I went bungee jumping for the first time.

The house is totally worth a visit and I agree with @lynfromnm make the pilgrimage to the Wis Dells and ride the Ducks, go karts and water slides! It’s the kitsch capital of the world and you will be glad you made the drive!

@lynfromnm, sounds cool, thanks for the suggestion!

@WestRiverrat, I kind of figured that might have happened. Either way, we have both wanted to go forever, so we will give it a shot anyway. We will definitely check out the Dells, then, too!

@Cruiser, we do love our kitsch!
