Hey, sports fans! How did you choose "your" team?

Asked by Seelix (14952points) May 18th, 2011

Tell us who “your” team is, in whatever sport you like to follow.
How did you decide who you’d be rooting for?

Is it a regional thing? An inherited loyalty? Did you pick randomly?

Why do you cheer those cheers for the guys you cheer for?

When I was a sports fan, I choose the Seattle Mariners and the Seattle Seahawks, because I lived in Washington and I was told that’s our team lol…..

Also, what do you mean by “inherited loyalty”?

Seelix's avatar

@Blackberry – I mean cheering for a team for no reason other than that’s who your parents/grandparents/whoever cheer for.

I root for the women’s beach volleyball team with the cutest bootays.

Usually, it’s Brazil.

@Jude So true….........
@Seelix Ahhhh, gotcha.

My football team can be found here.
I was born just outside the city, although I haven’t lived their since I was very little.

I still love the Seahawks and the Mariners from living in Seattle many, many years.

For the same reason, I like the Eagles and the Phillies.

In general, I have never been a sports person. In 2006, I watched the World Cup and fell in love with the German National Team and I have been a loyal fan ever since.

That’s how I inherited certain Bundesliga teams, too.

My dad, on the other hand, roots for his home teams (Dodgers and Lakers) without wavering, even during the really crummy times. He will also bleed cardinal red for the Trojans because USC is his alma mater (his car is decked out, too.)

@muppetish Yes, I specially loved it when Italia once again proved to be better. Forza Milan!

Pirrsburgh Steelers. Inherited.

One of the first memories I have is when Roberto Baggio scored a beatiful goal against the Czechs in Italia 90’. I was 6 years old and living in Mexico so the first time I was able to watch him play again ( on tv ), was in 91’ Juventus vs Milan, and I fell in love with Milan, Baggio’s rival team that day. It was mainly the colors, red and black, and since then I have always followed that team. It turns out that my family on the side of my Mother in Italy have always being Milan supporters, I found out about 8 years later when I visited them in Brescia. Destiny.

I have a tendency to pick teams that are good, but not overly dominating. In American sports I have a team in both leagues/conferences etc.. My favorite of the two is listed first.

EPL: Arsenal. Bundesliga: Borussia Dortmund. La Liga: Valencia. Serie A: Parma. FIFA International: England. MLB: New York Mets, Seattle Mariners. NFL: Green Bay Packers, New York Jets. NHL: Buffalo Sabres, Vancouver Canucks.

The Mets are my favorite because my favorite player as a kid was Darryl Strawberry. The Packers because I always liked the fact that the team is owned by the city, and is not the size city that can normally compete in a league like the NFL. The Sabres are my favorite from growing up in the area.

I’m more likely to cheer for the team my parents aren’t rooting for.

Hence my general dislike of the San Francisco 49ers.

My team is Chelsea F.C
I chose them because I’ve been watching English Premier League football since I was quite a bit younger and really liked their performance as well as their players.
My father supports Liverpool though, so it’s not a case of inheritance here.

Its always regional for me. I support the team that’s local to where I live now, and also the one that was local to my hometown.

I didn’t choose the Denver Broncos, the Denver Broncos chose me. ;)

I was in high school. The year was 1987, the era of John Elway. My boyfriend at the time was a Bronco fan. It was kind of hard to not like the team. I’m still a die hard fan, some 24 years later.

I have been a Yankee fan ever since I can remember. I am not sure how it came to be, I always lived closer to the Orioles but could never bring myself to change. Now I am in Australia but I still follow the Yanks.

Here I barrack (not nice to say root here, hehehe) for Collingwood because my mate is a die hard fan and whatever basketball club is local.

@queenie Boooo. Man U is where it’s at.

The Green Bay Packers. They are just so great, it nearly brings me to tears.

I have been a San Francisco Giants fan since 1962, when I first got interested in baseball and they won the pennant. I lived in San Francisco at the time.

I was a fair weather 49ers fan in the 60’s and 70s, huge fan in the 80’s through the mid 90’s; had a had time stomaching their play the last ten years.

I was born to parents who were rabid San Francisco Giants fans. I grew up listening to Russ Hodges and Lon Simmons call the games on KSFO. I think that must have been the only radio station our Chrysler Newport could pick up. After you’ve seen Willie Mays play at Candlestick Park how could you be a fan of any other team?

San Diego Padres—I grew up there.
Oakland A’s—because they’re not the Giants
San Jose Sharks—because they’re local
University of California Golden Bears—because it’s my Alma Mater.
Team Radio Shack because I like Levi.

“My dad, on the other hand, roots for his home teams (Dodgers and Lakers) without wavering, even during the really crummy times.”

What was your dad’s reaction to the Lakers getting swept by the Mavericks?

_zen_'s avatar

Not a natural born sports fan – I root for whomever my son does.

San Francisco Giants. I only follow baseball. I was a military brat and was born in northern California, just because that is where my father happened to be stationed at the time. When I was seven and living in Texas, again because that is where my father happened to be stationed, my brother told me I had to have a favorite baseball team. Since I was born in northern California the Giants were a logical choice. I have supported them unwaveringly ever since! During good years and bad. The only baseball cap I’ll wear is a giants. I waited 40 years for them to win the World Series last year, so obviously I was very pleased!

I support Portsmouth FC. I was born in Portsmouth so it is a loyalty thing even though they play shite most of the time!!!. My dad supports Southampton FC, which, seeing as Portsmouth and Southampton are rival teams, creates some healthy ridiculing banter!

muppetish's avatar

@Brian1946 I wasn’t home when it happened, but my older brother (also a die-hard Lakers fan) bitched about it on Facebook, not because they lost but because members of the team were being poor sports about things, didn’t try hard enough, etc.

Basketball renders a big, fat “meh” from me.

ucme's avatar

@Leanne1986 Two local derbies to look forward to next season then.

downtide's avatar

@dverhey Boo to you too. I’m a City fan :-D

For the MLB and NBA, Toronto Blue Jays and Toronto Raptors respectively because of proximity.
For the NFL, Dallas Cowboys because of NFL ‘94 on Sega Gensesis. I would always choose the Cowboys because they had the best rating in the game and the idea just stuck with me.
For the NHL, Colorado Avalanche because I used to be a Quebec Nordiques fan because I loved Wendel Clark, Mats Sundin, and Joe Sakic. So when they moved, I followed them to Denver.
In soccer, I am German so internationally I have to cheer for Deutschland. As for club teams, Bayern Munich and Tottenham Hotspurs are my two favourites.
