I am going away for two months. Any suggestions for keeping a plant alive?

Asked by SofaKingWright (530points) July 6th, 2011

I am wondering if there are any options for keeping an Orchid alive for two months while I am away. They do not need to be watered excessively, although I am sure two months would be pushing it.

Is there any easy solution, or safe automatic waterer anyone can recommend?

I do not have anyone available to look after it, or trust anyone to have my keys for two months. Otherwise, I would have someone care for it while I was away.

If you can’t have someone come to the plant, can you board the orchid with a reliable acquaintance or plant handler?

Mulch it heavily. Having a mulch layer on top of the soil really helps to trap moisture in.

I was going to suggest what @gailcalled said. Ask someone if you can leave the plant in their house for a couple of months.

Set up shoestring watering we did this in elementary school

There are these things called Aqua Globes and my cousin uses them when she goes away. I hope these help!

Or just give it to a neighbour and ask him/her to water it . [ one that has plants so they won’t forget to water it ]

If you live in an apartment you can ask the office manager if she can help out. You can either leave the plant in her office or ask if one of her workers can do it. When I was an assistant manager for some apartments we watered one of our residents plants for a month. She left instuctions on watering her plants and gave us dates to water them. We had the master key so there was no need to give us a key.
If not, maybe someone at work can keep it at the office and water it for you. Its only one plant so it shouldn’t be much trouble. You can email them reminders when its time to water it so they don’t forget and let them know how much to water it.

Seconding aqua globes. You can also get Miracle-Gro water storying crystals; they will keepthe plant from needing water as often. But even these remedies may not be enough for the full two months. Can you get a plant sitter/boarder?

I am not sure where you live. But I can understand when you don’t know anyone and/or you don’t want to impose. Maybe there is a Jelly near you who would plantsit? (A thought.) Or check your local phone directory, ad newspapers/booklets (you know those publications that have just ads in them) for a “Plant Sitter”. They do exist. Another option is to go to a senior apartment living place (where seniors have their own apartments) and put a little notice on their board: “Wanted: Orchid or Plant Lover to take care of one lovely orchid while I am gone.” And offer to pay them for it (if you can afford to do so or compensate them in some way.) Also, you could look for someone who just grows orchids in your area and offer to pay them to plantsit while you are gone. They might just do that. Lots of people would do it, but you do need to approach them and be creative. (Also, what would you be willing to compensate someone for watching your plant for two months? If you can’t come up with a sum, ask them what they might want. Then reach a compromise.)

If not, the other Aqua Globes and shoestring options are good ones, too. But if you want to see your orchid live, I think you need to place it in someone’s care.

Good luck!

Before deciding on the Aqua Globes, read more on the details. They are designed for larger plants and and supposedly are good for up to two weeks. When I was going away for a month, I asked a co-worker with a green thumb to take care of a plant that I brought to her. She did a fine job.
