Have you learned a new "skill" lately?

Asked by WillWorkForChocolate (23163points) October 3rd, 2011

I learned how to crochet over the weekend, and it’s fun!

Have you learned something new lately? What is it?

Yes lot’s… Nervous breakdowns tend to end up as catharsis… You kinda have to change or you are doomed to repeat the straight jacked strapped to the bed trick… No thanks!

WillWorkForChocolate's avatar

@GabrielsLamb Oh, but playing Doctor with narcotics and straightjackets is just another hobby of mine. =0)

I recently rescued a disgusting-looking dresser from the Dumpster in my apartment complex.

Using my hubby’s hardwood flooring tools, I stripped the thing and refinished it with dark mahogany stain, and polyurethane. Add some new hardware, and I now have a beautiful new dresser!

@Seek_Kolinahr I love that! My partner and I are doing the same thing. Well, I’m the “picker” and she transforms it into beautiful furniture.

I learned a way to make rings. I’ve been enjoying making necklaces for ages but I never knew a good way to make rings before until now.

@Seek & Jude

I love doing that, turning trash into art pieces and then returning them to the people you took it from.

I have yet to see anything put back out as garbage!

I love finding old replacement windows in the garbage, make stained glass murals out of them! I make faux flux with hot glue, covered in silver wax and paint in the spaces between the design and then put the windows back where I found them.

It’s sneaky art fun! Most of the reactions I have stuck around to see were like WTF? Cool!

I’ve learned to bake better.

I’ve learned that my daughter actually pays attention to what I say. I think.

I can knit like a motherfucker now.

I learned how to use some new applications on my smart phone. It’s a very mediocre skill.

I learned how to lay ceramic tile. It’s hard on your knees, buy and use knee-pads even if you look dorky. I guess you could say that I learned to use knee-pads without feeling like a dork. That, when you are my age, is a useful skill also.

I learned how to use a program to ease my job ^^

@redfeather Yay! I made a tiny “blanket” over the weekend, while I was learning to crochet, and I told my mom she could give it to her cat, LOL. Now I’m working on a pink blanket for my little one who loves pink, then I’ll make a black blanket for my ten year old gothling, haha.

@WillWorkForChocolate “my ten year old gothling” Just in time for Halloween.

@WillWorkForChocolate crochet me some cashmere undies.

Holding my tongue.

@Ron_C Yup, Halloween’s coming up fast! Yesterday when we got home from our mini-vacay, we decorated the outside of our house with chains and bones, mangled body parts, bloody hand prints on the front door, blood spatters, strobe lights, and our scary cat window stickers. And I’ve got a bloody arm hanging out the back of my Suburban, which always gets funny reactions from people who see it in parking lots. We love Halloween over here!

@redfeather Hehehe, I think panties would be a little too advanced for me just yet! :P

I have learned the very very basics of Mandarin Chinese, I can now greet people, count to ten, name several objects, and comment on their location and color.

Ok, it’s not exactly a new skill yet, but give it a few years and I’m sure I’ll be much better at it.

martianspringtime's avatar

I’ve been teaching myself how to sew (by hand.)

I learned to make an upside down question mark: ¿

Akua's avatar

I have to honestly say that I haven’t learned how to do anything new lately but over the years I have taught myself crocheting and soapmaking. Actually I did learn how to navigate my way around a new neighborhood by car without getting lost. Does that count?

erichw1504's avatar

I learned how to make an upside down exclamation point: ¡

WillWorkForChocolate's avatar

@Akua Yes, that counts. :D

@erichw1504 Wow… I am so impressed by your mad, mad skillz that I’m just…...... speechless.

Akua's avatar

@tranquilsea I wish I could take dancing lessons. That sounds like fun!

@WillWorkForChocolate How about a ‡ or an ←?

Pachy's avatar

This may not sound like a big deal to you overseas folks long-accustomed to sleeping under duvets, but it’s a fairly recent discovery for me, and just last week I learned, thanks to a YouTube video, a fast and easy way to put a cover on it.

Now if I could just learn how to get somebody else to dl it for me. ;-)

Over the past 2 months I have taught myself ASL. Now I’m just working on my speed for fingerspelling.
