Is that legal?

Yes it is… if you own the media. Which I do. I own over 300 DVDs, and I want them digitally so I dont scratch them up.

DVD Shrink is free and pretty easy to use.

Handbrake
Apple iMovie & iDVD

Although between Apple TV and YouTube, I need very few DVDs for viewing or sharing video anymore.

I always used Handbrake successfully but lately it has been failing more and more often so I have switched to MacX DVD Ripper Pro. That is proving very successful.

I think it is illegal but I figure if all anyone has to do is chase down criminals such as me and @mowens, the world must have become really crime free. And really, do Brad and Angelina need to make any more money???

@rooeytoo digitizing what @mowens is stating is completely legal.

Judges have determined that consumers have a right to copy a purchased DVD for their own use—say, for backing it up to another disk or perhaps watching it on another device, such as an iPod. That’s the same “fair use” rule that made it legal to TIVO, DVR, tape television shows for watching later, perhaps on a different TV.

The legal issue is when you duplicate for distribution or copy for profit.

DVDfab 8 is by far the best program. It rips, clones, and backs up any dvd, even blu ray

@XOIIO I looked at their website – are they all free – or cost 50 bucks each? Is there a free “dowmload now” version of each – just with ads – plus the option to buy at 50 bucks? I wasn’t clear on it.

XOIIO's avatar

@zensky I downloaded it free, “legally” so I wouldn’t know, bu it’s outstanding.

I use HandBrake for Mac, which is free and works fantastically. However, you can’t get it for PC as far as I know.

@XOIIO Gotcha. I’m not smart enough to download stuff like that – and too scared to anyways. Really. Freeway or the highway – no illegal downloading for me.

I’m on PC laptop windows 7 if anyone has any good ideas.

@ParaParaYukiko you can get handbrake for windows and Linux.

@zensky Hnadbrake is free.
