In Mildred Pierce, why was the daughter Veda so full of contempt for her mother, Mildred Pierce?

Asked by jca (36062points) March 1st, 2012

I recently saw the HBO miniseries Mildred Pierce, starring Kate Winslet. I was hoping that by the fifth episode they would explain why the daughter, Veda, had such contempt for the mother. It was not clear to me, because I couldn’t see anything specific that the mother did. The mother was always attentive and kind to Veda, but Veda treated the mother like dirt.

Do you know why the daughter Veda hated her mother so in Mildred Pierce?

Funny. I just watched the original. Mildred had to take a waitressing job after her husband walked. She hid that shameful fact (of having to work) from Veda, although Veda discovered her secret. Veda held her mother in contempt because her mother worked for a living. As Mildred’s success grew, she kept Veda in better and better style, which fed Veda’s materialism and her contempt for her working mother.

Essentially, she was a spoiled brat.

That same sense of entitlement that a lot of kids feel today.
I guess it is nothing new.
