What uncool song or piece of music will you confess to actually liking?

Asked by Harp (19179points) May 24th, 2008

Is there some musical schlock that actually gets to you, in spite of yourself? Are you man or woman enough to confess it to the rest of us?

Just to bare my musical soul, I’ll admit to having a soft spot for that laughingstock of the classical music world, Pachelbel’s Canon in D major. There, I’ve said it.

I like some country and most 80’s pop/rock (even Stock, Aitken and Waterman)............yes, I am the Queen of Cheese and proud of it :)

[edit]: Examples: Dolly Parton and Bananarama
[more edit]: I like Rednex – Cotton Eye Joe – those Swedes are just too cool!

“Alone Again Naturally” by Gilbert O’Sullivan.

Oh God, PupnTaco, thanks for the earworm!

Mandy, Barry Manilow.

@wildflower I, too, still have a fondness for 80’s music. It’s hard to disassociate some good years in our lives from the background music. It is what it is.

Spice girls! (don’t make fun of me! I love them!)

GD_Kimble's avatar

ABBA kicks ass, and I’m not ashamed to say it.

DeezerQueue's avatar

@TheHaight I won’t pick on you for liking their music. Personally I love happy, skippy, jumpy songs that sometimes have the suckiest of lyrics. Wang Chung Tonight, Tubthumping, if it makes me want to move I can’t seem to get enough of it. Spice Girls makes me want to move.

I almost forgot that song by Right Said Fred, Too Sexy for My Shirt or something like that.

TheHaight's avatar

yes! You agree with me, D. I also agree with all 80s music. Seriously, they may have all (or most) been “one hit wonders” but man those songs put you in a good mood.

I hear George Michael’s going back on tour, and will be performing his hits from the Wham! days…

“Xanadu” by Olivia Newton-John & ELO.
I do prefer the alternate version with Jeff Lynne on vocals and no ONJ, but I have both on my iPod.
I also have Abba, Klaus Nomi, and the Village People on my iPod, as well.

@ harp Listening to pachbell isn’t embarrassing. It’s a beautiful song that is very popular. I would pick another if I were you.

We’re looking for uncool, so spice girls

But for the record, Canon is not uncool.

Gwen Stefani’s “Holla back Girl” So stupid, but catchy. As for Grease, check out Less Than Jake’s Grease cover album. They’re a punk/ska band from Fl.

Bananaphone by Raffi ;-)

Uncool is in the eye of the beholder (or ear of the listener, in this case). My sister-in-law, an accomplished cellist, mocks me mercilessly because I like Vivaldi. She says all Vivaldi sounds the same. I say she is wrong.

BTW, I like Pachelbel’s Canon in D too. It might be cliched, but it is a lovely melody.

im a closet fan of Gloria Estefan and The Miami Sound Machine.

thetmle's avatar

Followup: first of all I’m 25/m. I have a lot of soundtracks from animated movies (lion king, spirit, brother bear…just to name a few). I listen to that stuff when I’m in the mood…I always keep a close guard when iTunes is on shuffle and there’s people around! Not to mention I have 16 volumes of YTMND soundtracks and the 3 LULZ albums.

Sir Mix-A-Lot- I like Big Butts. Everytime I hear the song, I get up and dance.

jlm11f's avatar

haha harp you KNOW you cannot resist it !

marinelife's avatar

@Rosyblue OMG That made me think of a really tacky blues song I like. The chorus of which goes: “I got one leg in the east, the other in the west, you standin’ in the middle doin’ what you do best.”

I better sign off. Big thunderstorm.

Shirelles, Chiffons, Shangri-Las, Neil Diamond, and yes, yes, yes, ABBA.

TheHaight's avatar

OOh…. I’ve got another one! Britney Spear’s new album. I’m sorry, but that girl has some great dance songs on there. My friends won’t let that down that I’ve actually got her on my iPod, but oh well!

AstroChuck's avatar

Did I mention that I own an Air Supply album?

Bsilver's avatar

yeah… I like Britney Spears too…

richmarshall's avatar

@AstroChuck~~Is ‘Air Supply’ considered uncool? I really am getting old.

I have so many… My husband keeps threatening to make them disappear. His two favorites to mock are The Sign by Ace of Base and Heart in Motion by Amy Grant. I just can’t help myself!
