Can I " get sun" in the winter?

Asked by blueknight73 (2706points) October 10th, 2012

If I ride around in a car with my sunroof open on a bright sunny day, could my shaved head and face still ” get sun” eventhough it’s only 35 degrees out?

Absolutely yes. In fact, many people are at risk for sunburns in winter because they stay out in the sun longer. Also bear in mind that we’re actually slightly closer to the sun in January than we are in July. I don’t know if it’s significant to UVA/B radiation, but it is true. ^_^

If the sun is shining, then the rays will fall on you. They are much more slanted during the winter so will be less intense.

Skiers always get sunburned.

Snow reflects sun rays and much of the UV, so you actually probably get more sun in the winter in an hour than you do in an hour during the summer (if you are out of the water).

“Aspenglow” is not about the winter light in Colorado, it’s about how your face looks after a couple days of spring skiing.

I went skiing in the Rockies for a couple weeks one time, came back much darker than any trip to Mexico, Hawaii, or anywhere else.

You sure can… I used to get nice tans riding my bike in the winter in South Florida ;)
And if you don’t get enough sun… you can always get a prescription for a vitamin D supplement! I became badly deficient upon moving to the North (well, north of Florida anyway) and it worked wonders for me.
