How do fashion bloggers (models) get all those new clothes in pictures?

Asked by samf (21points) June 16th, 2013

I followed quite a number of fashion bloggers who run the sites and model for the pictures. They’re definitely not one of those big time fashion bloggers who have connection with many name brands, but they still manage to get different nice outfits, clothes, and accessaries to model in the pictures. I doubt they actually spend their own money or can afford those fashion items. Is there some kind of way that you help to market a clothing company and in return you get to borrow their clothing to take pictures?

Buy, try and return?

What are you defining as “name brands?” Kate Spade vs. Chanel? Jeffrey Campbell vs. Louboutin? It would be helpful if you could post a link or two to such bloggers for reference. This makes a difference in my answer, but I’ll give you a general answer in the meantime.

You might be surprised as to how much they do purchase. Most of these people are devoted to fashion blogging, and their wallets reflect that; they have probably purchased a lot of the stuff that you see even though many of them probably can’t really afford it by most peoples’ definitions of affordability. Name brands also have much bigger discounts than you might expect, and many people (fashion bloggers and myself included) buy their name brand and designer items hugely discounted at sample sales, clearance sales, and designer discount websites. Fashion bloggers also frequently thrift shop and buy such items secondhand, which can save a lot of money.

If the blogger works in the fashion industry, it is likely that they have access to clothing and accessories that they can borrow, but they don’t actually own them. Many of the bigger fashion bloggers (i.e. The Man Repeller) are lent or even gifted items from designers that they then wear and post pictures of on their blogs.

I know with home décor blogs, they post links to the sites of people that send them free stuff. They will often say “thank you to so and so for these beautiful candles, they smell great, etc.” and when they mention name of company it’s a link so people can go to it and purchase. The company will also link the home décor blog, “see our candles on so and so’s blog this month.” So they all help each other out.
