Is there an electronic device to measure blood pressure?

Asked by srmorgan (6773points) September 18th, 2013

I read about advances in monitoring and collection of physical data by new devices and even by smartphones. Things like sleep measurement and patterns, caloric output, moods, even continuous monitoring of blood glucose levels.
I have hypertension and would like to see if there is a new alternative to pumping up the cuff every morning. I would like to see how my blood pressure fluctuates during the day.
Any breakthroughs anyone knows about?

I see some on line but they are very expensive…over $500. And I have no way of knowing how accurate they are. Perhaps your Cardiologist can make a recommendation.

I googled “electronic bp devices.” m

There are electronic ones which run on battery power. Omicron is the most popular mfr.

The one I have is from Kroger and its made by Omicron but has the Kroger brand name on it.

It’s small, portable and easy to use. Just push a button. And it keeps the last 30 readings stored in its memory.

It cost about $40 when it was on sale. I think the regular price is around $50

One of the biggest complaints people have is that its not as accurate as the big electronic ones at the Drs. office. However, it is very accurate internally (meaning comparing its results to itself).

So my Dr. had me bring it with me to my next OV where they took my bp with their machine followed by taking it with mine.

Once the differential between the two is established all the reading are transposed and the record is consistent.

You can get a wrist cuff. They are smallish and cost about $40—$70.

Yes. There is a cheap wrist one from Harbor Freight Tools the “Made in china” store. Here is the link. You can get them for $14 in the store and get 20% off if you use a coupon. Don’t forget to get your free light too.
The unit does not have FDA approval and like anything from china there is no oversight for accuracy. That is why they are dumping them at low prices. However, we tested two of them in the lab and they were surprisingly accurate. I even bought one for myself and you know how I dislike the MIC label. You must be sure to prop your arm so your wrist is relaxed and at the level of your heart.

Get one while they are still for sale.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that mine is the wrist one. But they are also available for the upper arm for around the same price.

The electronic devices still “pump”.

Yes, but beware! I had my BP checked with one and the reading was going, going, going… until they shut it off. The reading, a false one, was through the roof!
