How can I get an antibiotic without seeing a doctor?

Asked by sallyjo1930 (4points) September 22nd, 2013

I think I have a low grade infection in my colon and also my sinuses. I do not have money for doctors fees or expensive tests.

Mexico.
The chances of you having an infection requiring antibiotics in both you colon and sinuses simultaneously is low. If you have a condition where you have a supressed immune system and you get these sorts of infections frequently, you need to have a doctor manage these issues. Otherwise, it is more likely your issues are viral, and do not need antibiotics.
Can you tell me more of your symptoms?

You can go to a walk in clinic like Rapid Care for about a $100 fee. Sometimes they have sample medications on hand for free, and if you do have a sinus infection it may be the cause of your intestinal issues as well. If you are running a fever it is important you find a way to get checked out.
A general rule of thumb in telling the difference between an infection and a virus is that usually one symptom will be predominate.

Just a severe sore throat, sinus issues, etc.
Also viral symptoms tend to unfold over a few days time.
Starts with body aches, then progresses to sore throat, then congestion, cough etc.
Bacterial infections tend to manifest with only one predominant symptom.

I am prone to sinus infections and they can cause stomach trouble too from swallowing the infected drainage. Often you will not have a lot of congestion with a sinus infection as it is blocking drainage and the nest of the infection is waaay up in your sinuses.
A nasty taste in your mouth, headache, fever, bloody, rusty or green drainage all suggest sinus infection.
They are nothing to mess around with, if left untreated they can penetrate the nasal membranes/cavities and cause a brain infection.

You really need to be seen by a doctor.

Sinus infection and colon infection can be completely different bacterias, needing different antibiotics. What are your symtpoms and how long have you had them? Sinus infection less than a week with no fever usually is not treated with antibiotics. Do you have a bad cough? Is your mucous green? Did it start with a sore throat?

Colon infection, do you mean you have diarrhea? A lot of sinus onfection penicillins could make that much much worse. Cephlasporin antibiotics have less risk most likely. I don’t think you probably know enough to actually treat both if they are both serious.

Although, if you have tummy upse from a bacterial sinus infection, then as the jelly above suggested peniciilin might help. Augmentin is a magical one for the sinus infection, but again’ it can be very bad if you have diarrhea from a bacteria that grows rapidly when people take that drug. You could try Zithromax with less risk, a lot of people stash that, zpaks, and if you ask around someone might have one. I still don’t recommend you guessing though.

And, just to emphasize again, if you just have a cold antibiotics do nothing and are a waste.

@JLeslie Yep, I’m a z-pak girl. Bactracin works too but it makes my tongue sore and causes sensitivity to sunlight.

drhat77's avatar

@Coloma i hope you are ingesting bactrim and not bacitracin. because I think bacitracin is for topical use only. it could explain your symptoms though

drhat77's avatar

I didn’t realize bactrim had photosensitivity but I looked it up and it does, so how bout that.

Coloma's avatar

@drhat77 Haha…good catch. Yes, Bactrim/Septra…not bactracin. Doh!
Well..the person could always go to their local feed store and buy some chicken and cow antibiotics. A little Terramycin in a rabbit bottle might do the trick. kidding, kidding, not suggesting.
Hey, I use an antibiotic ointment for dogs and horses and bonus…it has a fly barrier. lol

I would not get an antibiotic without seeing a doctor.

If you have no money upfront, go to the hospital. They’ll bill you for it but most hospitals will accept small payments over a long period of time. If not, go to a clinic in your area. You can’t get antibiotics without a dr. And using a friend’s leftovers can be dangerous. And illegal. Antibiotics aren’t used for the same each time. Don’t risk it. See a doc.

@Coloma blame it on the spell checker.;>)
Sinus may only be an allergic reaction, upset tummy could be from the post nasal drip.

Oh and you can’t get antibiotics without a Dr’s script in my state, and you may have to go to Mexico. Which would be more expensive than a Doctor.

See if you can get into a free clinic.

Easy to buy them on the internet. But, scour around for a low cost clinic. That would be better they usually have sample medications right there. what happened to Obamacare thought this stuff was free by now

drhat77's avatar

@trailsillustrated the antibiotics are cheap, but getting to see a doctor can be expensive if you don’t have insurance

@Coloma Augmentin is my magic pill. It makes me feel better in more parts of my body than one. But, I hate taking medication of any kind, antibiotics included. I dread the day Augmentin stops working for me and I do worry that could happen. Zithromax works most of the time for sinus, but I know people who had failures with Zithromax and often their doctor prescribes it again, and then finally the third time they get something different and get better.

Meanwhile, I get a bacterial sinus infection maybe once every five years, so it doesn’t come up much for me.

drhat77's avatar

@JLeslie : double entendre?

JLeslie's avatar

@drhat77 Which thing? Was I clever and I don’t even know it?

drhat77's avatar

“It makes me feel better in more parts of my body than one”. It was a stupid joke. It’s moment has passed.

JLeslie's avatar

@drhat77 Is it a dirty joke? I still don’t get it :). It “cures” my chronic vulva pain and some other symptoms. So if it is some sort of dirty joke, the real joke is it is my girly parts.

drhat77's avatar

@JLeslie yes it’s a dirty joke. It just reminded me of those “excercisers” that were sold in 50’s and 60’s women’s magazines that were in fact female pleasurers. That’s the sort of language they used.

You can’t without violating the law. And you shouldn’t take antibiotics without the approval from a doctor. For good reasons.
