Tornadoes. I have a bit of a fascination with them. Although if I saw one for real, I imagine the fascination would be replaced by shit in my pants.

Before I read the details (weather phenomenon) I was going to answer “a newborn child”.

But to narrow it down to a weather phenomenon—hurricane – there is so much power and energy, and so many things that have to all happen at once, that make a hurricane truly impressive.

Thunderbolt & lightning very, very frightening, for me, for meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

Oh, so many choices! But the nuances of evolution blow my mind.

A fungus that attacks a certain species of ant, altering the ant’s behavior so that it leaves its natural environment and seeks out an environment that benefits the fungus.

A parasite that affects mice, attracting them to the smell of cat urine (cats being the next carriers).

A snail that eats infected cow feces, that then coughs up infected slime that is eaten by an ant, that then paradoxically climbs a blade of grass, which is then eaten by a cow, starting the multistage life cycle all over again.

Amazing.

Edit: Oh, drat, I belatedly read the details. I am awed and frightened by the power of tornados, especially those that are a mile wide – how is that even possible?

Thunder snow and other amazing thunder storms with lots of lightening!
I love bad ass T-storms! Woo Hoo!
Exhilarating and deliciously dangerous!

A few years ago I had to stand on my deck in a crazy summer night T-storm anchoring my market umbrella to the redwood patio table during high winds, thunder, lightening, the whole shebang. I couldn’t get the knot untied from the cord to lower the umbrella and it was launching the table up into the air with the danger of it flipping and crashing through my bedroom window. I stood on the deck holding the mast of the umbrella getting soaked and pounded for like 7 minutes. I felt like I was on a sailboat in the middle of a squall. lol

One of the best and funniest and intense moments ever.

Volcanos are pretty intense. It’s like the earth is popping hot magma zits. The heat from the volcano (or wildfires) is intense enough to create it’s own weather fronts.

Storms, any of them. We don’t get many “real” ones here, but the lower-intensity-ones are just my cup of tea.

Aurora borealis. Which I’ve never seen.

longgone's avatar

Oh, also: Fog! I love thick fog.

Dutchess_III's avatar

Me too. It’s so…. cool. Hey…did you ever read that book about that little girl—everytime it was really foggy she could walk into time, to the 1800’s.

longgone's avatar

^ No. Sounds cool, though!

It was middle school reading and it was cool!

There are plenty of crazy looking natural disasters, but I prefer the more peaceful ones :P

Aurora borealis (oh how I wish to someday see this)
Green flash at sunset (only lucky enough to see it once)
Sundog (I saw a really great one while I was in Honduras. The circle around the sun was broken up into most of the colors in the rainbow)

Weather being the qualifier, the cat 5 hurricane is always an attention getter.

Floods are the worst. The water just goes wherever it wants and you are totally helpless to do anything about it. Tornados are pretty scary too. I had one go right by my house. I could hear it but I couldn’t see it because of the heavy rain. But that was close.

Mimishu1995's avatar

This never cease to amaze me.

ibstubro's avatar

Where I am? The sky. I love to watch the clouds. They’re like artwork in progress, and there’s not a color that you won’t see there eventually. Rain or sun, there’s endless variety, and it’s so damned beautiful!

@nogjam That reminds me of the moving rocks in Death Valley

nogjam's avatar

I almost linked to that too! They are impressive.

GloPro's avatar

@nogjam Neat! I learned something new and I’ve lived in the snow for many years now.

@Blackberry Your life looks pretty tough. Great shots.

@josie We used to hole up with a keg and coolers of fridge contents in the oldest house on the block when I lived on the outer banks. The surf was great in a hurricane, but at the peak we were all huddled together drunk in a closet. Hurricanes are no joke.
