How do you get from Poughkeepsie, NY to Albany, NY?

Asked by Kairi (794points) February 22nd, 2015

My boyfriend is in Poughkeepsie (more specifically Vassar College for a free convention this weekend) and he wants to come see me before he has to go to New York. I work in Albany, so he’d be coming to my job to see me. The only things I am finding that go from there to here is the Amtrak, but it’s giving me really stupid things like making him pay for a trip all the way to Chicago for him to get off at the Rennsalear stop and then bus over to me, which is a ridiculous waste of time and money and is sold out anyway. Can anyone figure out a way here that isn’t by car or Amtrak? I’m having no luck. Greyhound doesn’t go to Poughkeepsie at all, and all other buses I’m finding go from there to NYC, but not the other way to where I am. He was going to get a ride from a friend, but the friend is going to some mall near the White Plains area and can’t bring him with him or anything.

Not a necessity for him to come visit, but it would be nice if he could.

Thank you!

Also, I checked the college’s website and they only offer Amtrak as an option but that’s not possible.

Amtrak seems like the most direct way to get there – have you tried phoning them? Perhaps their website is not giving you the best route, for some reason.

I found some new routes from them but the cheapest is 25 bucks and won’t get him in the area until 11:45pm, which means he has 15 mins to get to albany from rennsalear and zero time to see me so it’s pretty pointless

Craigslist rideshare?

I did it once and I took Amtrak. Buses from county to county are inefficient.

@jaytkay never heard of that o.o

@jca the amtrak routes make no sense to me, personally

I just looked on Amtrak and there are multiple trains that take barely over an hour to get between the two cities. Prices are about $25—$36 depending on the time of day.

I thought of something else. Trailways you can catch from Newburgh or New Paltz, if someone can take him across the river. New Paltz probably makes more sense. Check here if you’re interested. $6—$15 one way.

Here’s what I found for a Poughkeepsie to Albany trip. Amtrak is fastest and cheapest.

@jleslie I had to change the destination from “albany” to “alb – rennsalear” to find those. Thanks!

Trailways is our best bet but to order a ticket ahead of time you have to print it and he cant. I’m not sure if he can just buy it there or not

@tropical_willie I tried but it won’t get here before I have to go home

Regarding the train I don’t understand the time problem. There is a train almost every hour.

I would guess there is no problem buying a ticket at the bus station as long as there are seats available. Just call them up and ask.

Another option is Newburgh airport probably has some sort of bus or transfer to Albany Airport. It would take more time to go down and across to Newburgh airport, but there are public transportation options like metro north to Beacon train station and Beacon to the airport is a $1 bus ride. It would take way too long in my opinion. He can rent a car for a day and just drive it. That’s probably $50 plus gas for one day (overnight) the gas would be less than $10.

@jleslie the site was telling me differently for some reason.

he can’t drive so that option is out. But that could work even if it takes time. I’m at work until midnight anyway

Update everyone.

He’s decided to just take the bus back to the city and come see me a different day. I’m okay with that. He called me to let me know and apologize and make sure I’m not sad about it. Thanks for the help, everyone!

Maybe you used the wrong station codes? POU is Poughkeepsie and ALB is Albany (you’re right that the station is not actually in Albany) if you ever need to look it up again. If you have a smart phone you can get the Amtrak app. I have it on my phone. I’m pretty sure it was free.
