Why will my dogs go in the lake and swim with no hesitation, but won't go into the baby pool in the back yard when it has water in it?

Asked by Dutchess_III (46812points) July 27th, 2015

It’s hot out there! They’re inside most of the time, but the times they are outside I’d think they’d enjoy getting in the pool, but they won’t have a thing to do with it.

Why is that?

Also, I had a friend who had a dog who would lay in the shallows at the lake when it was hot, so he stayed constantly cool, but my dogs don’t do that. They’re either immersed in the lake, or they’re completely out of the water.

They’re smart…why haven’t they figured this out?

Ask them.

My dog does not go near the kiddie pools. I think it has to do with how loud and scary they are. If you drop a dog in there with you, their nails scratch along the bottom and make all kinds of noise and it’s slippery.

This could be why your dogs won’t go in the baby pool. Either that or they are morally opposed to artificial ponds.

I did, @janbb. They refused to answer.

You know…that could be it. The rocks and gravel in the lake are familiar. Slippery, clacky, hard plastic isn’t. I never thought of that. Thanks.
They aren’t morally opposed to a damn thing, including eating their own crap and vomiting it back up on the carpet.

My old girl doesn’t go into kiddie pools either. The puppy does.

In our case, I think it’s the fact that she would have to jump in. She’s scared to do that. She won’t jump into lakes, either.

Your kiddie pools have slippery floors? Ours are a thin sheet of rubber, and not very slippery at all.

Maybe they instinctively know it’s for humans. I wouldn’t want a dog in a baby pool with a small child. There isn’t any chlorine in a baby pool. I have a thing about the germs as you know. I wouldn’t want a dog in a pool I was in, especially not a pool without chlorine. I will go in lakes and oceans, so maybe that makes no sense, but that’s what I do.

No, they don’t instinctively know it’s for humans. I just left it out there, filled, more for the dogs and birds and any other critters, more than anything.
Plus we rarely had little kids in the pool.
I would have no problem with swimming with a dog in a big pool. But there really isn’t room for everyone in one of the baby pools I’m talking about.

Maybe they peed in it and it’s not enough volume to dilute that. Dogs aren’t always stupid.

THEY DID NOT PEE IN THE POOL, FOOL!! Besides, Dakota, as stately and beautiful and smart as she is, sometimes eats her own crap. I hardly think a bit of pee would faze her.

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

Laughs. I’ll come up with plan B. My dogs were big time crap eaters.

Maybe the cat peed in it and they have a line they won’t cross. My real guess is the bottom is a bit slick for them. They aren’t comfortable with the footing.

Dutchess_III's avatar

The cat did not pee in the pool! It’s over her head!
I know. Maybe you put some of your promiscuous syrup in the pool, and they won’t cross that line. Smart dogs!

Yeah, I have to agree…they don’t like the slick, hard bottom. Dakota is just wary like that. But…I had a dog in the past who liked it.

A guy I worked with had a dog that was terrified of hardwood floors. She couldn’t get any traction.

@Dutchess_III what if you put enough pebbles in the bottom of your pool that the dogs wouldn’t feel the plastic bottom? You’d still need to teach them that it’s OK to get in there, because they’ve long associated it with an unpleasant memory of the old bottom. It’s worth a try.

That’s an idea, @snowberry!
