What chores did you love as a kid?

Asked by RedDeerGuy1 (24473points) May 26th, 2017

I liked pumping gas and mowing the lawn. What did you enjoy? What chores did you hate? I hated washing the dishes. Too slimey.

Mowing the lawn.

I liked feeding the animals and killing black widows.

My mother said to “watch out” for that really pretty girl who moved in next door. So I grabbed my binoculars and obeyed, for about three years.

One day, her father strongly recommended that I become disobedient.

He seemed extraordinarily sincere.

I complied….

Chuckin’ bales, planting a garden, picking berries, feed and water the chickens, snapping beans, shelling nuts, driving the tractor.
I didn’t like hanging laundry, but I liked taking it down after it was dry. Oh, and ironing.

I didn’t have any.

Chores? love? None—not a one. I hated any sort of chore and resisted and made a fuss and generally made my mother sorry she’d asked. The very word was enough to trigger evasion when I could manage it and sullen, minimal compliance when I couldn’t. I guess I must have been a real pain on the housekeeping side of things.

What I hated worst was whatever I’d most recently been asked to do. Didn’t matter what, I simply hated it.

I liked dusting/polishing the dressers and tables. Strangely, now I hate it….hate it.

@Jeruba, how bravely honest is your post!
I had chores I hated, mostly dishes, ech, but I liked lots of them. Ha, I liked shucking corn, except the silks, and the worms. I liked ripping away the covers, but once inside it was tedium.

I can’t remember any chores I enjoyed. I’m not sure I can think of any chores I love now I’m grown up!

I honestly don’t recall being assigned any chores
other than occasional, random ones. And I’m fairly sure none of those was anything I did without grumbling.

Burning the trash, I still enjoy cutting the grass

I liked to put coins in paper tubes so my Dad could take them to the bank. I’d make nice neat stacks of 10 or each type of coin and then put them in the tubes. It was so satisfying.

janbb's avatar

@LuckyGuy Not surprised. I’ll bet you weighed and measured each stack too.

I like helping my grandmothers cooking. It’s actually very enjoyable to peel potatoes, pluck bean sprouts, deshell nuts, etc whilst having a conversation with them. They have a lot of story to tell.

janbb's avatar

@Unofficial_Member Oh – that gives me one. Helping my mother bake. I didn’t really consider it a chore and it helped me become the baker I am now.

ucme's avatar

Ahem, mummy had staff for that.

@janbb That’s how I do it today. ;-)

I hated cleaning my room, but I liked shoveling snow. We were enlisted for a lot of physical labor/yard work growing up and I still enjoy that type of work very much today. I am more than happy to get out and sweat in the dirt.

I had a paying job from quite a young age which I actually liked doing but I don’t remember having any regular chores apart from taking the dog out.

I hated chores. Period. And stop using foul language like that.

JLeslie's avatar

Does cleaning ones room count as a chore? I wouldn’t say I liked it, but when I was a teen I got all new furniture I picked out, and bedding, and I like when it was all straightened.

Patty_Melt's avatar

That counts for me.

How remiss of me, I just remembered something which I initially saw as a chore but learned to embrace as a necessary evil, mummy had me fire errant members of staff #characterbuilding
