Have any of you seen "Bowling for Columbine"?

Asked by NomoreY_A (5546points) June 20th, 2017

More specifically, what the H E double L happened to Charlton Heston? I know the guy passed on some years ago, but how could a left leaning liberal Dem, who marched with MLK and who I believe was present at Kings I have a Dream Speech, turn into a gun toting, raving wing nut, as he did?

Yes I saw it.

@stanleybmanly What did you think about Michael Moore’s so called “Ambush interview” with Heston at the end? The old jerk just got up and walked out, when Moore asked him about having a gun rights rally in a city where a recent (at that time) drive by shooting occurred and a 4 year old girl was killed. Mind boggling.

As with Reagan, no one tells you at exactly which point in their lives either of those guys began exhibiting the symptoms of full blown dementia. It isn’t talked about, but you can bet your ass that Reagan was South of a full deck at some point in his Presidency, and I mean well before the end of his term. I don’t know whether Moore knew at the time that Heston’s mind was slipping, but the NRA wouldn’t know the difference or care if they did.

@stanleybmanly Can’t believe you would blaspheme Saint Ronnie of Reagan (cue choir) in such a manner. I’m shocked, shocked, I tell you!

Hestons views on guns changed and there is no reason to believe that he did not remain socially liberal. Now, being a figurehead of the NRA is quite extreme and it’s not too surprising because it simply became his new meal ticket. Heston was not much better than Moore in that regard but at least Heston was guns only. Moore being a piece of shit sensationalist that will exploit any left wing crusade for the sake of profit is utterly shameless. He has no agenda other than that. Past Roger and me I see almost no value in what he has produced. He is the left wing equivalent of Anne Coulter. One of the people ruining the political dynamic of this country by exploiting and increasing the divide to a degree. Thanks a lot asshole.

So I’m to take it your not a fan of Mr. Moore’s work. Point taken. I thought Bowling for Columbine was awesome. I like the way he tweaked the nose of the Gun Culture.

Yes, “Bowling for Columbine” was a troubling and memorable film.

I believe Charlton Heston was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, and that his condition progressed rapidly. That hideous disease can explain any variety of pronouncements or behaviors.

Did Heston actually become right-wing, or was he just pro-gun-rights?

The times advanced too rapidly for Heston. He was disgusted by the rise of the gay movement as well as other conservative benchmarks for the toppling of civilization. But here’s the thing that inclines me to give Chuck and even Ronnie (a former dedicated union activist) the benefit of the doubt. What might convert a man in the forefront of progressive struggle to a gay bashing gun totin grouch? How about a persistent decline in the ability to reason?

People on the left don’t want to believe that some of their own can shift over to the other side but it happens. He was over on the right long before dementia was likely a factor. What really happened is the left moved more left and he moved more right, no need to quantify why.
