Do you find product placement in movies to be distracting?

Asked by rockfan (14627points) July 3rd, 2017 from iPhone

I was discussing this was a friend recently and he made the excellent point that for him, movies that feature fake companies or generic brands in scenes in which characters are eating or using technology is actually more distracting.

I agree with your friend. I would rather see Cheerios than Oatios, because I would be trying to figure out what they were eating instead of what the movie is about.

I don’t mind if movies use real products if they are essential to the plot. What bothers me is if the cereal box, for example, is set squarely at the edge of the counter during a kitchen scene. That’s silly. Everyone pushes stuff back on the counter so it won’t fall off.

I agree with @chyna about distractions. It’s the same concept as all TV and move phone numbers starting with 555. Not believable.

It annoys me when it’s noticeably product placement. That is, it’s pretty clear that the product and/or the view of it is not just the natural choice of the creators that makes sense for the story.

Not for the most part. If they are done well they blend in and are unobtrusive. And, I hate to say it out loud but at least for me they are wasting their advertising budget on product placement because I could not tell you a single thing that is included in a movie or tv show that I am sure they paid to have put in there. What kind of car was that last Transformer? WTFK’s.
What kind of beer were the guys drinking in that bar scene? WTFK’s.

Not usually but kind of what @chyna said, if it’s not a well known brand, I’m more focused on trying to figure out what that object is and forgetting about the movie.

Absolutely. I wouldn’t mind if the placement was done naturally, but too often it’s quite blatant.
