Will 15K milligrams of cranberry (capsules) twice daily cure a UTI ?

Asked by Aster (20023points) August 3rd, 2017

I get one about three times a year. Last time the “nurse” told me if I get another one in that month I’ll have to have a colposcopy. No I won’t. I’ll just go to a GP and get Bactrim.
Anyway, will the above supplement cure it? I have light chills too.

Why is nurse in quotes? Is she a faux “nurse”?
The answer is, as dappled leaves says, no.

15K milligrams of cranberry is 15 grams, or just over a half ounce. And you;re going to take that twice a day?

Cranberry is a somewhat effective preventative, but not effective at curing. From WebMD:

Some of the chemicals in cranberries keep bacteria from sticking to the cells that line the urinary tract where they can multiply. Cranberry, however, does not seem to have the ability to release bacteria which are already stuck to these cells. This may explain why cranberry is possibly effective in preventing urinary tract infections, but possibly ineffective in treating them

^^^^^^^. yes; I’ve read the same thing. “Possibly” ineffective at curing them.
This nurse in question had quotes around her title because she is the second medical person working in the clinic and she’s not.a doctor. I don’t know what she is but she has a lot of pull in that place. Not with me but with the doctor.

@Aster, I always cured them by drinking tons and tons of water and cranberry juice. I mean, so much water that my stomach hurt.
I don’t think the cranberry juice did much of anything special, except to add to the liquid amount I was sending in to rinse my bladder out, thoroughly.

An infection is going to require an antibiotic to get the infection out of your system or call the local Shaman or Witch Doctor.
NO

My wife swears they clear hers up.

I’m going with no.

Do you pee after sex? Make sure you do.

Dutchess_III's avatar

Well, yes, the peeing is important throughout the whole time, but trying to pee when you bladder isn’t full is a very, very bad idea. Instead of being washed through the urethra the bacteria just clumps up at the opening.
Whereas if you make sure your bladder is REALLY full you have much more success rinsing it out. So get a full bladder, pee…and pee HARD!

@Dutchess_III Are you referring to my comment. The peeing after sex is to avoid getting the infection in the first place.

Drinking a lot of water when you have an infection is definitely a good idea, I’m with you there.

Here is my philosophy on a UTI, and why I’ve only gone to the doctor one time for one, when I had my first one in college and I was terrified. (The nurse asked if I’d been having sex, and when I said “Yes,” she looked at me in disgust.)
Anyway, take a two liter bottle, one with a small opening, like an empty pop bottle.
Pour some fine grain sand in it, say 1/8th full of sand.
Pour in just enough water to get the sand wet.
Turn it up side down to pour it out….and what happens? A little water comes out but most of the wet sand has created a damn at the opening and very little sand escapes.

Now, take that same bottle with 1/8th sand, completely fill it with water and turn it upside down. When you do, squeeze the sides of the bottle so it sends the contents out with force.
The sand swirls around and much more of it comes out the second time.
After about the 4th time you’re pretty much clear, but keep it up for a couple of days to be sure.
But, as horrible as they are, I still drink a lot of liquid every day, and wait till my bladder is really full to pee. And I pee with force.

@JLeslie might work, might make things worse, especially if you try to pee and your bladder isn’t full.

@Dutchess_III If someone is prone to UTI’s it’s common advice to pee after sex. If you don’t need to pee then go drink water, so you can pee within 20 minutes. The pee flushes out the urethra. This isn’t old wives tale stuff, medical doctors tell this to patients.

If you get another UTI you’ll have to have a colonoscopy? I am not seeing the connection.

JLeslie's avatar

Yeah, the colonoscopy is ridiculous in this case. Maybe they were referring to simply needing a coloscopy because of your age, and it had nothing to do with the UTI’s, but it wasn’t stated clearly.

Unless they think you have some sort of fistula from your colon to your bladder? You would be sick all the time. It can’t be that. I don’t know much about that though, I’m just wild guessing.

Mariah's avatar

Psst… colposcopy.

Cranberry is for preventing, not treating a UTI. You need antibiotics.

Please don’t underestimate UTIs. My grandpa died after going septic from a UTI.

JLeslie's avatar

Oh. Colposcopy! Lol. Still, isn’t colposcopy for the vagina/cervix? Or, is that word used for the urethra and bladder too?

@Aster Do your cultures come back with infection? Or, they are treating something unknown?

Aster's avatar

^^^^^^^ I googled “UTI and colposcopy” and found nothing. She’s the professional but I’m Not having a colposcopy! And yes; it’s for the cervix. Are we missing something?
In January the urinalysis showed bacteria. Then in March same thing and that’s when she said I“d have to have a colposcopy if I had one more UTI . She didn’t specify “if you have one more before 2018” or anything like that. I may die of sepsis because after taking the strong cranberry caps I have zero burning or chills. Now I’ll go take my first one of the day and see what happens. Thanks, @JLeslie as always.

Can you narrow down when it happens? After a certain sexual position? Masterbating? Sex with your husband, etc.?

Usually, the bacteria is ecoli, but there are others like staph that can cause UTI infection. Ecoli is obviously found in the rectum. Staph is found everywhere. It can be mycoplasmas too, but that is t treated with Bactrum and most doctors don’t culture for it anyway.

No matter what, pee after any “sex.”
