Take a shower instead of a bath.

make the bed. The wife is invariably the first one in and the last one out, and believe it or not really appreciates a nice cozy made up bed. And yet when it’s her bedtime and if I am within earshot, she’ll step into the bedroom and gasp as if we’ve been burglarized. If I’m not within earshot, she’ll usually just climb into the messy bed and pout about my failings.

Load and empty the dishwasher. I don’t like seeing dishes piled in the sink, so I’m content to make sure that doesn’t happen.

Eat, although that is compulsive at times too.

Everything I do is voluntary except a few things like triple-checking the coffee pot, my hair curler, or checking the back door is locked three times before leaving the house. Compulsions will not be denied unless you put in the work.

It’s quite difficult to distinguish between what is voluntary and what is done under compulsion. We act voluntarily to bring pleasure and we act under compulsion to avoid pain but there are exceptions.

Do you mean things that a person will do as an independent choice but will resist if someone tries to force or demand it? For example, offering to bring dessert versus being told that your assignment is apple pie; or making a voluntary contribution to a group gift versus getting a note that says you owe $10.
